Zero has announced that they have entered into a collaboration agreement with Extro Technologies Inc. to use their patented coil drive technology in their motorcycles.
According to the agreement, the two companies plan to install Exro’s coil drive technology in a Zero ZF75-10-based motorcycle.
The clean tech company Exro thus supplies its latest class of control technologies that have been specially developed for electric drives. The coil drive expands the possibilities of the electric motor and drive train because it enables two separate torque profiles for a single motor.
The first profile was tuned for high torque at low speeds. Accordingly, the second profile was designed for a high speed. By changing the configuration for different operating states, a reduction in energy consumption is achieved.
Since the limits of traditional electrical machines are becoming increasingly clear and additional motors, heavy-duty gearbox solutions and, in general, overdimensioning of the equipment have to be used for more power, this technology would be a new solution. One could achieve more efficiency, reduced volume, less weight, more torque and a higher maximum speed with the coil drive technology.
“We are excited to work with Zero on this development,” said EXRO CEO Sue Ozdemir. “The ZF75-10 design is already an elite motor and, in partnership with Exro, there are opportunities to elevate the powertrain performance even further. This partnership is another step in the commercialization of our technology, and we look forward to delivering.”
