Cardo Systems, Midland and Uclear introduce the common “Open Bluetooth Intercom” (OBI) standard, which makes it possible to pair communication systems from different manufacturers.
Connection problems between different devices should be a thing of the past
Until now, most developers relied on “universal connectivity” when connecting communication devices. This allowed for cross-brand pairing between Bluetooth devices, but when connecting, you usually had to live with some disadvantages – which you didn’t have if you connected devices of the same brand.
Often the pairing process was complicated, previous connections were “forgotten” and it was often not possible to make phone calls or listen to music in parallel with the connection with other drivers.
This should change with the new common standard “Open Bluetooth Intercom”.
Problem-free communication despite different devices
With OBI, these problems should be a thing of the past. Even if participants on a tour are using devices from different manufacturers, a seamless Bluetooth Intercom connection is to be possible.
To make this possible, the OBI standard includes several extensions to the Bluetooth “Handsfree Profile,” enabling direct duplex communication between Bluetooth-enabled devices.
Cardo will initially introduce the new standard this year on its SPIRIT, FREECOM X and PACKTALK product lines. Those who already have a corresponding device at home will be able to update it wirelessly via the over-the-air software update. Exactly when the updates with OBI integration will be rolled out has not been announced at this time.
