For decades, motorcycle manufacturers have been trying to automate shifting on two wheels, sometimes better and sometimes worse.  While many earlier attempts failed, current developments have the potential to change the world of motorcycling forever.  KTM has patented a new automated transmission (AMT) and successfully tested it in its upcoming 1390 Super Adventure R.  This innovation could be available as early as the end of 2024.

Details of the new KTM automatic transmission

KTM presented its AMT transmission at the Erzbergrodeo in Austria, where it was tested in the new 1390 Super Adventure R.  The heart of this system is a transmission shift lock for transmissions with a centrifugal clutch, which is also used in the well-known Rekluse clutch.  This electronic shift lock prevents the motorcycle from rolling away when parked with a gear engaged.  Thanks to this technology, there is no need for a separate parking brake.

The new AMT transmission from KTM combines a centrifugal clutch with a shift motor that acts directly on the shift drum.  This enables the rider to change gears at the touch of a button.  The clutch lever is completely eliminated, although the foot shift lever can be retained as an option to allow manual shifting if required.  This technology enables a seamless combination of automated and manual shifting.

 

Automatic transmission in comparison

With this innovation, KTM is following in the footsteps of other manufacturers who have developed similar systems.  Honda, for example, has already enjoyed great success with its Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) system, particularly on models such as the Africa Twin.  BMW is also working on a similar system, the Automated Shift Assistant (ASA), which is expected from 2025.  In contrast to these systems, however, KTM uses a single centrifugal clutch, which simplifies the system and requires fewer components.

 

Future availability and models

The new AMT transmission is expected to be available from model year 2025 in the 1390 Super Adventure R as well as in other models such as the Super Duke GT.  It remains to be seen whether the transmission will be offered as standard or as an option, but there is a good chance that it will play a significant role in KTM’s future model range.
