Cause of the problem: lack of warning of loss of drive power
The recall affects around 788 LiveWire motorcycles worldwide, including around 574 S2 Del Mar and 214 S2 Mulholland. The fault lies in a high-voltage fuse that can “open” under certain operating conditions, interrupting the power supply to the engine. Although all other electrical functions such as ABS, lights and indicators would continue to work properly, the engine would stop running, posing a significant safety risk to drivers. The problem could occur without warning, increasing the risk of sudden loss of drive while driving.
Distinction from previous recalls
It is important to note that this recall (August 2024) differs from a previous recall (February 2024) of the S2 Del Mar models, which was due to a software issue. While the earlier recall involved a problem in the control software, the current recall involves a hardware fault in the high-voltage fuse.
Action taken by LiveWire to rectify the problem
LiveWire has already informed its dealers worldwide about the necessary steps and plans to replace the affected fuses with a new high-voltage fuse with a higher amperage rating. This repair will be carried out free of charge for customers. According to the company, the corresponding recall kits will be delivered to dealers from August 19, 2024.
Customer information and further steps
Dealers were notified of the recall between August 14 and 21, 2024, while owners of the affected motorcycles were notified between August 19 and 26, 2024. LiveWire advises all owners of the affected S2 Del Mar and S2 Mulholland models to contact their local dealer as soon as possible to have the fuse replaced. If the motorcycle has already been resold, the company asks that the new owners be informed and their contact details forwarded to LiveWire so that they can also be notified.
For the U.S. market, LiveWire Customer Service is available at 1-855-387-4337 to provide further information. The current recall (high voltage fuse) is registered with LiveWire under the number 1003
Review of previous recalls
This current recall (August 2024) is not the first challenge LiveWire has faced recently. Previously, in February 2024, the company had already launched a recall due to a software problem with the S2 Del Mar. At that time, an error in the programming of the Vehicle Supervisory Controller (VSC) could cause the entire drivetrain to suddenly shut down, which also posed a significant safety risk. This earlier recall was numbered 1001 at LiveWire and was registered with the NHTSA under campaign number 24V-149.
The combination of these incidents underscores the importance of comprehensive quality control in both hardware and software development to ensure driver safety and build long-term confidence in the LiveWire brand.
