A look at the heart: The engine

The heart of the BMW R 1300 GS is the newly designed two-cylinder boxer engine.  With 145 hp (107 kW) at 7,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm, it shows increased performance compared to the previous model.  The increase in displacement results from an enlarged cylinder bore and a new crankshaft with reduced stroke.

The BMW R 1300 GS exhibits an increased torque presentation throughout the rev range, especially between 3,600 and 7,800 rpm.  This is relevant for both solo rides and two-up rides, and is suitable for diverse riding conditions and track profiles.

  1. drive

Although power and torque have been increased, the fuel consumption of the BMW R 1300 GS remains almost the same as the previous model.  The new boxer engine relies on reduced load change backlash to provide a more direct response to throttle commands.  Features such as air/liquid cooling and variable oil intake remain, while the transmission is now positioned below the engine, resulting in a more compact design and weight reduction.

BMW’s ShiftCam technology for varying valve timing and lift is also incorporated, contributing to more efficient combustion and fuel use.  The stainless steel exhaust system is designed for performance and light weight, and a catalytic converter ensures compliance with emissions standards.

To accommodate different rider preferences, the new R 1300 GS offers four standard riding modes and additional riding modes as optional equipment.  Engine drag torque control (MSR) is included as standard and helps avoid unstable riding conditions.  In addition, Hill Start Control is included as standard, making hill starts easier.

Chassis and handling

The chassis of the new BMW R 1300 GS has been completely redesigned with the aim of counteracting the trend of ever larger motorcycles.  “With the new BMW R 1300 GS, we wanted […] to [create] an extremely focused and slim GS,” says Jochen Beck, BMW R 1300 GS project manager.  The newly developed chassis consists of a sheet metal main frame made of steel and a rear frame made of die-cast aluminum, which provides improved steering precision and riding stability.  The weight reduction of 12 kg compared with the previous model also contributes to improved handling.

The front wheel guidance of the new R 1300 GS is based on the innovative Evo Telelever principle, which is designed to provide even greater steering precision and riding stability.  Rear wheel guidance has also been redesigned using the revised Evo Paralever.  The introduction of the Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) electronic chassis enables dynamic adjustment of damping and spring rate as well as load compensation, enhancing the driving experience on all surfaces.

Additional comfort is provided by Adaptive Vehicle Height Control, which automatically adjusts the vehicle height depending on operating conditions.  The optional sports suspension enhances the motorcycle’s off-road capabilities.  The braking system has also been revised and offers greater safety in conjunction with Integral ABS Pro and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC).  Depending on the equipment variant, cast, forged or cross-spoke wheels are available.

The ergonomics of the new R 1300 GS have been optimized for rider and passenger.  The so-called ergonomics triangle between the handlebars, seat and footrests has been optimized for a sporty, relaxed riding position.  With various seat variants, footrests and handlebar risers, the motorcycle can be individually adapted.

Electrics and electronics

The R 1300 GS is equipped with the new electronic suspension system, Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA).  This system dynamically adjusts damping and spring rate and offers four different riding modes, including a new “Enduro” mode for off-road experiences.

“The new R 1300 GS integrates the Riding Assistant with Active Cruise Control, Front Collision Warning and Lane Change Warning, which represents a comprehensive safety package in this segment,” explains Markus Hamm, Functional Development Control Systems at BMW Motorrad.  These features are aimed at making riding safer and more comfortable.

In terms of lighting, the R 1300 GS offers a full LED headlight in the new matrix design and state-of-the-art LED light units as standard.  The adaptive cornering light “Headlight Pro” is available as an optional extra and provides improved illumination of the road.

Comfort and practicality are at the forefront of the R 1300 GS.  The motorcycle features optional comfort rider seats and heated seats for the rider and pillion passenger.  In addition, an on-board power and USB socket and a ventilated smartphone charging compartment are integrated.

Connectivity is provided by a 6.5-inch full-color TFT display and the BMW Motorrad Connected app, which offers a variety of features, including arrow navigation and route sharing.

For added safety, an intelligent emergency call is available as an optional extra.  A standard Service Assistant provides information about upcoming service work and sends status data of the motorcycle to the app.

Finally, the new lightweight lithium-ion battery helps reduce weight and can be monitored via the Battery Guard function.  All these aspects underline the technological and safety features of the new R 1300 GS.

Design and variants

The BMW R 1300 GS not only retains its characteristic design, but also presents itself in a number of unique model variants, each of which sets different accents and offers something for every type of rider.

Each of these variants brings its own special features, be it in design, functionality or equipment, to meet the different demands and preferences of the riders.  However, the essence of the GS – its off-road competence and suitability for touring – is retained in each version.  Thus, the R 1300 GS offers a diverse range, from the sporty off-road expert to the elegant and exclusive travel companion.

Of course, BMW again offers a very wide range of customization options.

Conclusion

The BMW R 1300 GS features various improvements and technological innovations.  The optimized two-cylinder boxer engine and revised chassis are intended to provide improved riding characteristics, while various design variants and customization options appeal to a broad target group.  Technological features such as Dynamic Suspension Adjustment and Riding Assistant contribute to functionality and safety.  Overall, the R 1300 GS presents itself as a versatile motorcycle with diverse equipment options for different rider needs.
