The first race of the sidecars of the Isle of Man TT 2022 was overshadowed by a fatal accident in which newcomer Cesar Chanel lost his life.
Shortly after the start of the 3-lap race, an accident occurred at Ago`s Leap. According to first reports, it is assumed that a following sidecar collided with the crashed sidecar, which resulted in a major fire. The race was stopped.
The sidecar driver Cesar Chanel lost his life in the accident, the co-pilot Olivier Lavorel (35) was flown to the Aintree hospital, he was in critical condition.
The team was competing in the Isle of Man TT for the first time and impressed in qualifying with an average speed of 108.420 mph.
As announced on Wednesday after the race, there was a mix-up in the identification of the fatality. According to initial reports, Olivier Lavorel was incorrectly reported as the fatality. However, he is in hospital seriously injured. The fact alone that this mix-up was possible does not bode well for his condition.
