Yamaha has filed an innovative patent for a new type of active suspension specifically designed to minimize front suspension dive under braking and rear lift under acceleration. This technology, which is similar to that used in MotoGP, could be used on models such as the Yamaha R1, MT-09 and R6, making these bikes even more powerful and safer.

Challenges when braking and accelerating

When braking hard, the front brake is preferred by most riders as it can be precisely controlled with the fingers. However, this practice often causes the front suspension to dive heavily, causing the rear wheel to lose contact with the road and reducing traction. This phenomenon, known as “dive”, is a well-known problem. At the same time, the so-called “squat” occurs when accelerating, in which the rear suspension is compressed and the rear of the motorcycle drops.

Yamaha’s patent in detail

Yamaha’s new patent describes a system that reduces both squat and rear lift. According to the patent text, the technology includes a brake control system that activates both the front and rear brakes. At the same time, the suspension control system makes adjustments to improve handling. These adjustments include increasing the damping force of the front fork in the compression direction, increasing the spring reaction force of the front fork, increasing the damping force of the rear suspension in the expansion direction and reducing the spring reaction force of the rear suspension.

Technological advantages

This electronic control could significantly improve handling during hard braking and acceleration maneuvers. A softer suspension offers advantages on bumps and improves traction, while a firmer suspension is better suited for precise and fast maneuvers. Yamaha’s new technology aims to find the balance between these two extremes to ensure optimal handling.

Possible future applications

Although it is currently unclear when this technology will be used in production motorcycles, it could represent a significant advance in the development of sports motorcycles. In particular, models such as the Yamaha R1, MT-09 and R6 could benefit from this innovative suspension technology, providing better control and safety.

Outlook

The development of Yamaha’s active suspension technology could have a major impact on the future design of sports motorcycles. This technology has the potential to enhance the riding experience by increasing stability and control under extreme riding conditions. Motorcyclists can look forward to seeing how this innovation will prove itself in practice.
