Rossi actually wanted to wait and see how competitive he is in the first races of the 2020 season and then decide accordingly whether he will also start in MotoGP in 2021. However, since no race has yet taken place, he will probably have to announce his decision in the next few weeks.
But he already shows a bit that he would like to start in 2021. A career end in the 2020 season would not be particularly nice, especially since it is still not clear whether this year can still be driven. He does not consider such a career end to be fair to his fans.
Another argument in favor of an extension is that Yamaha was able to take a clear step forward with the current MotoGP motorcycle. This was already evident in the pre-season tests.
Rossi also has a new crew chief, with whom he gets on well and whose very different approach he appreciates.
But he already has clear ideas for his time as a MotoGP pensioner too. In addition to working with his teams in Moto3 and Moto2, he also wants to continue racing. However, he will switch to four wheels and would like to run about eight races a year. It is not yet clear in which racing series this will be.
So the probability is very high that we will see Rossi in MotoGP in 2021 as well. Probably in the Petronas-Yamaha team, but with full factory support and appropriate material. We should learn more shortly.
