Yamaha Motor has developed an environmentally friendly recycled polypropylene (PP) for motorcycle fairings and plans to use it in the ASEAN market starting in 2023.  This move is in line with the Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Plan 2050, which aims to achieve CO2 neutrality and use 100% sustainable materials by 2050.

New eco-friendly materials for Yamaha motorcycles in ASEAN market.

Yamaha Motor announced today that it has succeeded in developing a high-quality and environmentally friendly recycled polypropylene (PP) that can be used as a raw material for the main exterior trim of motorcycles.  The company will use the new material for the main commuter models in the ASEAN market from 2023.

Sustainable and environmentally friendly material

The eco-friendly recycled PP material is made exclusively from pre-consumer materials whose origin is traceable and that do not contain environmentally harmful substances such as detergents or production waste generated in the manufacturing processes of petrochemical and molding companies.

Importance of polypropylene in the motorcycle industry

Plastic materials are widely used for motorcycle fairings, and PP materials account for about half of these parts, making it an important raw material for the company.  Yamaha Motor has been working on developing and using recycled PP in its products for some time.  However, the newly developed material offers even greater strength and visual quality compared to conventional recycled materials, and can also be used for areas that require greater aesthetic impact.

Expanding the use of recycled materials

Yamaha Motor plans to increase the use of environmentally friendly recycled PP in the future and increase the proportion of such recycled materials in motorcycles.  In addition, the material will be gradually introduced in other product categories.

In line with the Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Plan 2050, Yamaha Motor aims to achieve carbon neutrality in all its business activities by 2050, including the entire supply chain.  To make this a reality, the company has set a goal of using 100% sustainable materials by 2050 and will expand its efforts to use green and other recycled materials in its products.
