BMW has filed a patent for a motorcycle seat that can be adjusted in width. They want to offer more individual comfort with it.
When the butt falls asleep
The accessory trade, or even the manufacturers themselves, often offer seats in different heights to adjust the motorcycle optimally for the rider. Nevertheless, it can happen that longer rides could result in poorer blood circulation to certain parts of the body and that they “fall asleep”. BMW wants to counteract this with a new seat that is adjustable in width.
Folding seat wings
BMW has developed a system in which a seat that is split down the middle can be unfolded, making it adjustable in width. There appear to be different detents so that different widths are adjustable. The two wings that make up the seat are fixed only in the front area, so when they are adjusted, only the rear area widens.
It is not clear from the drawings whether the slot that is created by opening the “seat wings” remains open or is covered with a special cover.
