The regulations of the MotoGP stipulate that at least 13 races must be driven in order to choose a world champion. Due to the current crisis, however, more and more racing weekends are being postponed indefinitely. So won’t there be a world champion in 2020?
Dorna Boss no longer excludes cancellation of the entire season
In conversation between Dorna Boss Carmelo Ezpeleta and the Spanish newspaper La Razon, the 13-race-rule was discussed. Ezpelate is currently of the opinion that one can be happy if there will be 10 races this year. Even a cancellation of the entire season is no longer completely excluded. Therefore, one should also think about whether one might be able to hold races without an audience.
For the organizers of the individual races, however, the economic conditions would change extremely. The organizers need the visitors to cover the cost of the event. If one consider that the organizers have to pay Dorna to host a MotoGP weekend, one might also find a compromise here.
2020 without world champion?
Ezpeleta is of the opinion that the 13-race rule applies only to normal times and that the current time cannot be considered “normal”. It would therefore be quite possible that this regulation would be softened in order to be able to choose a world champion in 2020 – even if only a few races could take place.
