The fascination with motorcycles takes many forms, but few are as unique and ambitious as Grind Hard Plumbing Co's project - building a monster chopper that pushes the boundaries of what is possible with its unconventional design and gigantic dimensions.  What began as a vision with huge mud tires and a heart from the KTM 1190 has developed into an impressive testament to creativity and mechanical know-how.

Vision becomes reality: the birth of an extraordinary chopper

In September 2023, the project to create an off-road chopper with comically large mud tires as its trademark began.  Initially, the project seemed to consist of nothing more than two huge tires and a KTM engine.  But behind the scenes, a clearer vision was already forming that went far beyond what outsiders could guess.

Over time, the Monster Chopper took shape.  By November 2023, it received a custom single-sided swingarm, and by the end of March 2024, an ingenious rear fender with stabilizing fins, a custom-made fuel tank that doubles as a seat, and even brakes were added.  Each new part was adapted with patience and precision, a process that underlines both the challenges and the satisfaction of such an undertaking.

A heart of power: the monster’s drive system

The power source of this chopper is a V2 engine from a KTM 1290 Super Adventure, which delivers 160 hp (approx. 117 kW) of power and 140 Nm of torque at 6,750 rpm.  This engine, embedded in an unusual frame made of oversized trellis tubing, paired with hydraulic wheel hub steering and a swingarm that also serves as the rear frame, redefines mechanics.

Challenges and solutions along the way

Despite the impressive progress, the Grind Hard Plumbing Co team faces several challenges, including optimizing the hydraulic steering and adding functional brakes.  The first rolling tests showed that the steering, in combination with the huge tires and their lean angle, could still be improved.  A special focus was therefore placed on adapting the tires to optimize handling.

The Grind Hard Plumbing Co: more than just a project

Behind the Monster Chopper is the Grind Hard Plumbing Co, a group of friends from Idaho, USA, who are known for their unconventional vehicle designs.  Their projects testify to a passion for the extraordinary and the urge to turn dreams into reality.

A look into the future

The Monster Chopper is not yet ready to ride, but the team is getting closer to its goal with each passing day.  The combination of creativity, technical skill and the willingness to push boundaries makes this project an exciting undertaking, and many are following its development with great interest.  The journey from idea to riding monster chopper may be long and challenging, but it is also proof that with dedication and tenacity, extraordinary results can be achieved.
