Kawasaki is working on a new electric dirt bike with interchangeable batteries

Kawasaki is planning to launch a new electric dirt bike on the market.  The Japanese motorcycle manufacturer, which already offers models such as the Ninja and the Z e-1 in the electric segment, now appears to be developing another model.  A recently leaked patent shows some details of the upcoming bike.

Design and technology of the new model

The design patent suggests that the new electric dirt bike from Kawasaki may be equipped with a system for interchangeable batteries.  This could allow riders to have multiple battery packs and easily swap empty batteries for charged ones.  This technology is particularly practical for longer journeys or for use in remote areas without charging facilities.  The concept of multiple battery packs could also increase the range.

Cooperation in the consortium

Kawasaki is a member of a consortium that also includes Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki.  This consortium is working on the development and improvement of battery replacement technology.  The collaboration could help Kawasaki’s new model to benefit from the joint progress and knowledge of the other members.

Technical details

The patent describes a mechanism for controlling the flow of electricity from the battery packs to the electric motor.  A control unit regulates the connection and disconnection of the current path through a switching element.  This is intended to prevent overloading of the motor and maximize the service life of the battery packs.  A special control technology, known as “Pack Balance Control”, ensures that the battery packs are charged and discharged intermittently to minimize differences in the charge level.

Future developments

The patent does not show any of the existing electric models such as the Ninja or the Z e-1, suggesting that Kawasaki is working on a completely new model designed specifically for off-road use.  This could indicate a new development direction for their electric motorcycles.

Conclusion

With the new electric dirt bike and battery swap technology, Kawasaki could be taking a new step in electric mobility.  The combination of technological innovations and cooperation with other manufacturers could lead to interesting developments in the motorcycle industry.
