The secrets behind the model code
The recently discovered model code “SD14” has caused excitement in motorcycle circles, especially among Honda fans. The interpretation of this code gives clues to what might be coming. Historically, the first letter indicates engine size, with “S” representing machines over 900cc. The “D” identifies the bike as a dual-sport machine. Given that only a few models exist with the “SD” code so far, this suggests Honda has big plans for the 2024 Africa Twin.
New findings: More than just a facelift
Fresh from the Swiss Federal Roads Office comes a paper that provides more interesting details about the Honda Africa Twin for the 2024 model year. At first glance, peak power may seem unchanged at 102 hp, but maximum torque increases significantly from 105 Nm to 112 Nm. The inline two-cylinder engine now reaches this additional torque at 5,500 rpm instead of 6,250 rpm, which makes for a noticeably more powerful pull-through in practice. The top speed, however, is still supposed to be sealed off at 199 km/h.
But it is the changes in the chassis that particularly stand out. The Africa Twin switches from the classic enduro size front wheel to a wider and smaller 110/80-19 format. This adjustment should improve handling on asphalt, but possibly at the expense of off-road capabilities. For off-road enthusiasts, the Adventure Sports variant with a 21-inch front wheel will likely continue to be available.
The wheelbase will be 5 mm shorter due to the smaller front wheel, and the overall height of the machine will increase by about an inch. The latter indicates an enlarged windshield and thus promises more comfort for the rider. With a 3 kg increase in overall weight, it is also speculated that this could be due to expanded and upgraded equipment. Conceivable features here include front and rear radar.
Technological advances in view
Honda has not been asleep in recent years. Numerous patents filed in recent years point to exciting developments for the Africa Twin. These include front and rear radar systems that will most likely be incorporated into the production model to keep up with competitors like KTM’s 1290 Super Adventure and Ducati’s Multistrada V4, which already have such systems.

While we all eagerly await the official unveiling of the new Africa Twin, more technical details are expected to leak out in the coming weeks.
