Ducati doesn’t necessarily seem to see the future in electric drive, as they are already considering and preferring other alternatives.
Away from electric drive?
At the MotoStudent event in Spain, students built an electric-powered motorcycle prototype. The project was supported by Ducati and the company logo also adorned the finished bike. At the time, Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali spoke at the event about the future being electric and Ducati not being far away from mass production.
Since then, it has been quiet about an electric Ducati and apparently they are now pursuing other plans.
Francesco Milicia, VP of Sales bei Ducati: “Will we produce an electric Ducati soon? No. We think that for the kind of machine we produce now, an electric motorcycle cannot guarantee the pleasure, the range, the weight etc. that Ducati riders expect.
We are also looking carefully at other solutions for zero or minimal emissions, such as synthetic fuel. Other brands in our (Volkswagen) group such as Porsche are looking at it and it’s something we are looking at in the medium term.”
Milicia is addressing the current problems with electric motorcycles. At present, they are simply too impractical, as the range is too short, the charging process takes too long, they are very heavy and unfortunately also lack a good engine sound.
However, Ducati has not completely written off the topic of electric motorcycles: “We are thinking and working on electric,” added Milicia. “We are part of a group that’s going quickly towards electrification and it’s a good opportunity for Ducati.
We are always trying to build a better product for our customers. The one thing we’ve worked on more than anything else for the last five years is improving the quality and reliability of the products.”
