Carbon fiber has long been used in the automotive sector to save weight. The high-strength fabric is also increasingly used in motorcycles.

Fairings, chassis or suspension are already made of carbon. BMW has already gained some experience with the material in the HP4 Race. The DC Roadster concept could show a development here that could soon make it onto the mass market.
BMW uses a tubular frame design that consists of carbon tubes that are connected at the end points with aluminum pieces. Visually, it looks like a conventional tubular frame, but it is much lighter and more stable.
Carbon is an expensive material, but since the construction described is very simple, it shouldn’t be so important and be much cheaper to produce than a conventional frame made of carbon.
BMW has announced that it will still take five years before theyr first electric motorcycle will be launched, but it is quite possible that the carbon tubular frame will make it earlier.
