Blechmann is the nickname of Bernhard Naumann, a renowned customizer from Austria. Together with BMW he presented his latest creation, the Blechmann R 18.
Visually, as well as technically, the R 18 follows in the footsteps of famous models such as the BMW R 5 to focus on the essence of the motorcycle. For this reason Bernhard Naumann has also changed as little as possible on the chassis and technology and only used original mounting points for his own creation.
Without sketches or drawings
Naumann does not use sketches or drawings in advance, he gets his inspiration from the work itself.
“I draw my design directly on the object with the final material. This allows me to respond directly to requirements and I have all proportions in view at all times”.
In order to be able to estimate the proportions for the front fairing, he “bridled the beast from behind”. The single seat is based on the original supporting structure of fender, seat and pillion. The fuel tank was elaborately adapted. It has been made narrower, which gives it a sportier look and allows a better view to the engine. The sporty look is further underlined by the incorporated knee recesses.
Basis of the stub handlebars was the original steering tube. The headlamp was designed in a discreet kidney design. A classic filament lamp was placed in the centre. The basic layout of the custom bike is underlined by the headlight being tilted forward.
Finally, the bike was painted black and given a white double lining typical of BMW. About 450 working hours went into the Blechmann R 18.
No classic customizing
The Blechmann does not understand his work as classical customizing: “My work begins by removing parts of the original version until a white canvas remains. As the construction progresses, the design develops. I call this ‘Rapid Prototyping Blechmann Style’ “
