According to KTM, the all-new 1290 Super Adventure R is designed to conquer challenging terrain and take riders anywhere in the world.
Performance data
The KTM 1290 Super Adventure R is powered by the latest version of the LC8 engine, which of course also meets the Euro5 standard. It was possible to save 1.6 kg on the engine. It produces 160 PS at 9,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 138 Nm at 6,500 rpm.
The engine housing has been made lighter, new pistons and an improved shift mechanism have been installed. The coatings have also been revised.
Maintenance is due every 15,000 km and consumption is listed at 5.7 l per 100 km.
Fresh cool air
A new feature is the use of a second radiator, which is intended to optimize the flow of air through the motorcycle. Specially designed air ducts are intended to ensure that the warm air is better dissipated and less is directed to the rider’s legs. This is said to have a noticeable effect, especially during slow rides.
The air filter box has been redesigned. Removing four screws gives access to the air filter, which consists of vertical instead of horizontal fins. This should help keep dust and sand off the bottom of the air filter box.
New ergonomics and bodywork
The focus during development was on ensuring easy and intuitive handling even in the toughest terrain. Therefore, the bodywork was also revised to offer new ergonomics. The three-piece tank with 23 liters capacity, was positioned as low as possible. By lowering the center of mass, maneuverability is increased and the Adventure R offers better feedback.
For more dynamic cornering, the steering head was moved back 15 mm, the front part of the engine was relocated and a slightly longer swingarm was fitted for more feedback when accelerating. In addition to the chassis changes, the rear frame has also been redesigned and fitted with a stepped seat. The seat height is 880 mm. A practical storage compartment can be found underneath.
Suspension elements
The WP suspension has been revised and also contributes to better handling. WP XPLOR technology is also said to connect to off-road racing. The 48mm fork offers 220mm of travel. The damping function is split and can be adjusted via dials. The WP PDS shock also offers 220mm of travel.
Technology for better performance
The KTM 1290 Super Adventure R has been equipped with the latest electronics package. A new 6-D sensor collects information on the motorcycle’s lean angle, position and behavior. The data is used for the assistance systems. The Adventure R is equipped with traction control, engine drag torque control, stability control and off-road ABS. All assistance systems can be adjusted or turned off, which should accommodate off-road enthusiasts.
Rain, Street, Sport and Offroad driving modes are on board as standard, with Rally mode optional. This allows the throttle response to be more aggressive and one of nine different levels of rear wheel slip to be set.
The new 7-inch TFT display is connected to a new Connectivity Unit and can navigate menus faster or provide turn-by-turn navigation when used with the KTM My Ride app.
Smoother and more precise shifting has been achieved through revisions made in collaboration with PANKL. This is particularly noticeable when using the optional Quickshifter+, which is now said to shift even faster and more accurately.
The Adventure R is equipped with the keyless “KTM Race on” system. Sensors for a tire pressure monitoring system have also been installed to ensure greater safety.
Other equipment
The KTM 1290 Super Adventure R stands on aluminum spoke wheels from Alpina, which manage without a tube thanks to O-rings in the spoke ribs. They are covered with Adventure tires from Bridgestone.
Braking is by Brembo 4-piston calipers. Windshield, levers, footpegs and handlebars are adjustable to adapt the bike perfectly to the rider.
Optional software packages are available that include additional assistance systems. The Rally Pack includes Rally riding mode, MTC slip adjustment and adjustable throttle response. The Tech Pack includes all Rally content and adds Quickshifter+, engine drag torque control, Hill Hold Control and an adaptive brake light.
