Yamaha has developed a new automated manual transmission, the Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission (Y-AMT).  This innovation aims to provide riders with an enhanced riding experience by combining the benefits of a manual transmission with the convenience of a fully automatic system.

Inspired by Jin-KI Kanno philosophy

Yamaha is known for its advanced technologies and continuous efforts to improve the riding experience.  Inspired by the Jin-KI Kanno philosophy, which emphasizes the feeling of unity between man and machine, the Y-AMT system will enhance this experience.  The system allows riders to focus on the sporty performance of their motorcycle by providing smooth gear changes.

Functionality and modes

The Y-AMT system offers two shift modes: a manual mode (MT) and a fully automatic mode (AT).  In manual mode, riders can shift gears using two rocker switches on the handlebars without having to operate a clutch lever.  The plus lever is used for upshifting, while the minus lever is used for downshifting.  This arrangement enables fast and precise gear changes.

In fully automatic mode, drivers can choose between two programs: “D” for a relaxed driving experience and “D+” for sportier gear changes.  Both modes can be changed by pressing a special “mode” button on the handlebars.

Technological details

The Y-AMT system weighs 2.8 kg, which allows it to be integrated into the motorcycle in a slim and compact way.  Two electric actuators take over the tasks normally performed by the rider’s left hand and left foot.  This ensures smooth shifting without the rider having to take their hand off the handlebars.

The technology behind Y-AMT is based on Yamaha’s earlier developments such as the YCC-S system (Yamaha Chip Controlled Shift), which was introduced almost two decades ago for the FJR1300 sports tourer.  However, the new system uses electric actuators instead of a hydraulic system.

Application and models

Yamaha plans to make the Y-AMT system available for various models in the near future, including sporty naked bikes, sport tourers and commuter motorcycles.  In particular, the MT range models powered by Yamaha’s Crossplane engines are earmarked for integration of the new transmission.  This includes models such as the MT-07, MT-09, MT-10 as well as the YZF-R7 and Tracer models.

Market and competition

With the introduction of the Y-AMT system, Yamaha is entering a market that is increasingly characterized by automated and semi-automatic transmissions.  Other manufacturers such as Honda, BMW and KTM have already launched similar technologies on the market.  Honda’s DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) has proved a popular choice, while BMW and KTM have also developed their own systems.  Yamaha’s approach offers a lighter and simpler alternative that should still provide good performance and control.

Conclusion

The Yamaha Y-AMT system represents a step change in the evolution of motorcycling.  It combines the control of a manual transmission with the convenience of a fully automatic system, allowing riders to concentrate on riding.  With the introduction of this system, Yamaha will continue to be active in the motorcycle industry and offer new options for sporty riding.
