TVS Motor acquires Engines Engineering and establishes Global Center of Excellence

TVS Motor has acquired the renowned Italian development company Engines Engineering (EE) and will use the company as a global center of excellence (CoE) for design and development in the future. The aim is to further expand its own expertise in the field of modern vehicle technologies and in the development of premium and electric motorcycles.

Experience from renowned projects and racing

Engines Engineering has been involved in the development and testing of well-known motorcycles in the past, including the reissued Suzuki Katana, which is based on the GSX-S1000. EE has also gained experience in the development of electric motorcycles and so-called connected vehicles. In the motorsport arena, the company developed machines for the Moto3 class and supported Mahindra in its entry into the Grand Prix World Championship. Mahindra previously held a significant stake in EE.

Focus of the new development center

The specific focus of the new center of excellence is not yet known. According to Sudarshan Venu, Chairman of TVS Motor, the development center could also contribute to the revival of the Norton brand. Venu emphasized: “The establishment of the new Italian Global Center of Excellence is another milestone in strengthening our capabilities and accelerating our journey to rethink mobility. By combining Engines Engineering’s creativity and racing experience with our strengths in development and design, we are expanding our capabilities to develop world-class, connected, and electric vehicles that set new global standards.”

The statements suggest that the Norton brand in particular could benefit from the expertise of the development center in Europe. The establishment in Bologna, Italy, follows a period of expansion for Norton in the United Kingdom. After purchasing the long-established British brand in April 2020, over £200 million (approximately €232 million or around $246 million) was reportedly invested.

Modern development methods and collaboration

The new development center will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology – from digital simulations and rapid prototyping to AI-supported methods and high-tech materials that are more commonly found in aviation. This should significantly accelerate the development of new TVS models and further increase the company’s competitiveness.

A modular platform approach will enable new features and technologies to be integrated flexibly without having to start from scratch each time. This is particularly advantageous given the growing demand for connected motorcycles and intelligent technology.

TVS Motor also plans to collaborate closely with universities, start-ups, and suppliers worldwide. The aim is to promote fresh ideas and further strengthen the company’s innovative power.
