The 31st Speed Week at Lake Gairdner in South Australia ended with a new land speed record for the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650.
The event took place from 8th to 12th March and although last year’s 30th anniversary had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, this Speed Week was dubbed number 31.
New record already at the first run
The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 “Sabre” competed in the M-F 650 class. A class for 650cc motorcycles without aerodynamic fairings, running on commercial unleaded fuel.
On the very first run, Charlie Hallam was able to beat the previous record of 119.961 mph (193.06 km/h) set in 2016. Scoring for the run showed a speed of 123.178 mph (198.24 km/h).
He improved on the second day, finishing with a 130.307 (209.71). The bike was then locked away by the organizer overnight, as per the regulations, in order to complete the back-up run the next day with the unchanged bike.
In that run, Hallam managed a speed of 133.779 mph (215.30 km/h). This resulted in the calculated new record of 132.05 mph (212.51 km/h).
Sabre had to wait a year for deployment
The Sabre was built in 2019 during Royal Enfield`s Bustet Knuckles build-off by HRA Geelong (Andrew Hallam) and Hallam Cycle Works (Charlie Hallam). Modifications include Öhlins suspension, lighter rims covered in Pirelli Diablo slicks, a custom sprocket and a swingarm extended by 130mm.
Originally, the Sabre was to be tested at Lake Gairdner Speed Week. However, due to the Corona pandemic, the Sabre had to wait another year.
