Overview: What’s behind the Triumph recall?
Triumph Motorcycles America recently filed a safety notice with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall involves the Trident 660 and Tiger Sport 660 models built from 2022 to 2024. A potential problem with a hose clog and faulty sensor information could lead to sudden engine failure.
Facts and figures: How many machines are involved?
According to Triumph’s own figures, as many as 7,541 two-wheelers could be affected by this problem, representing the entire inventory of these model lines (in America). Owners of these models should therefore visit a workshop as soon as possible.
It’s important to note here that motorcycles are usually produced in one plant for worldwide sales, so other markets could be affected as well.
At the heart of the problem: what exactly went wrong here?
It all revolves around a clogged hose leading to the MAP sensor. Faulty data could thus reach the engine control unit (ECU). Since the ECU is responsible for adjusting the air-fuel ratio, an incorrect signal could lead to unstable engine running and eventually an engine stop.
Which serial numbers are affected?
For the Trident 660 model line, this affects vehicles that rolled off the assembly line between early January 2021 and late July 2023. The chassis numbers range from SMTL10UL5NTAE9988 to SMTL10UL8RTBP8186.
Tiger Sport 660 models manufactured between early August 2021 and early August 2023 also fall under this range. Here are the chassis numbers in the spectrum from SMTL20UL6NTAV5235 to SMTL20UL2RTBP8617.
Symptoms and remedies: How do you recognize the problem and what is done?
A first warning could be an engine that runs out of round.
Authorized Triumph workshops will replace the affected component free of charge. Instead of the original hose, a new, differently designed triple hose will be installed.
Communication and future plans
The company has notified its U.S. dealers on August 18, 2023, and has suspended sales of the affected models in parallel. The internal name for this action is “Safety Recall Action Notice 609.” Triumph intends to contact registered owners directly around August 31. As of August 8, 2023, the motorcycles are equipped with the new hose and are no longer subject to this recall.
Where can I get more information?
For additional information, owners can contact Triumph Customer Service in the U.S. at 1-678-854-2010. Additionally, the NHTSA hotline at 1-888-327-4236 is a place to go. The Triumph recall carries the identification number SRAN 609, and NHTSA lists the action as 23V-583.
It’s important to note here that motorcycles are usually produced in a factory for worldwide sale, so other markets could be affected.
