Accident circumstances and initial measures
During the sighting lap shortly before the Moto3 race, Dettwiler was struck at high speed by Rueda. The immediate medical attention he received at the track and his rapid transport by helicopter to the hospital were crucial. After his admission, Dettwiler initially fought for his life, with several cardiac arrests reported. The first few days were considered particularly critical.
Injuries and medical procedures
On Friday, a detailed breakdown of his injuries was announced for the first time. Dettwiler suffered an open fracture of his left tibia and fibula, which was treated in an initial operation. In addition, his spleen had to be removed. A tear in his cervical spine means he will have to wear a neck brace for several weeks. His lungs were also affected. Two hemorrhages in his brain were particularly worrying, but according to doctors, these are currently receding without further surgery. For this reason, Dettwiler was able to be brought out of the induced coma.
His intracranial pressure was monitored using a probe, as is standard practice in similar cases, in order to detect any complications at an early stage. Dettwiler is now awake, able to make small movements, and able to communicate with doctors and relatives. The doctors treating him emphasize that Dettwiler recognizes his surroundings but does not remember the accident itself.
Transfer to private clinic and current state of recovery
On Friday, Dettwiler was transferred from the intensive care unit of the state hospital to the Prince Court Medical Center, a private clinic in Kuala Lumpur. Better medical care and rehabilitation are to be provided there. The decision was made in consideration of the high medical standards of the private clinic.
Further surgery on his leg is necessary, although it is still unclear whether this procedure will be performed in Malaysia or after he returns to Switzerland. At this point in time, there is no reliable prognosis as to when Dettwiler will be able to return to Europe.
Reactions from those close to him and further prospects
In a joint statement, Dettwiler’s team, family, and management expressed their relief at the progress made. “Noah is making remarkable progress,” they officially emphasized. At the same time, they expressed their deep gratitude to the medical staff at the race track and in the hospitals involved. The support from the motorsport world and fans worldwide is highlighted by those close to him as significant and motivating.
The team’s support also extends to Jose Antonio Rueda, who was involved in the accident. It is known that he suffered a fracture to his right hand, multiple bruises, a concussion, and a lung contusion. Rueda was also transferred to the Prince Court Medical Center and was able to return home to Spain after a short time, where he is scheduled to undergo surgery on his hand.
Outlook: Still a long way to go to full recovery
Although Dettwiler’s progress is considered positive, according to doctors and those close to him, he still has a long way to go. A full recovery is not foreseeable at this stage, and it is emphasized that patience is still required. Whether and when Dettwiler will be able to return to motorcycling remains open.
Team boss Paolo Simoncelli expressed confidence in a statement and confirmed that Dettwiler has a place on the SIC58 Squadra Corse team in 2026. Nevertheless, uncertainty remains regarding his sporting future, as the focus is currently entirely on his recovery.
