Financial difficulties and restructuring measures
The economic problems at KTM are the result of a considerable decline in demand, which is impacting the entire motorcycle industry. According to Pierer Mobility AG, the parent company of KTM, the restructuring proceedings will be filed on November 29, 2024. The aim is to agree a restructuring plan with the creditors within 90 days in order to enable a sustainable restructuring.
A central measure is the redimensioning of production in order to reduce the inventory at KTM and the dealers. A production reduction of one billion euros is expected in 2025 and 2026. Production is to be paused from Christmas 2024 until the end of February 2025. These measures are part of a long-term strategy to restore the company’s economic stability.
Job cuts and impact on the workforce
The restructuring also has an impact on the workforce. KTM is planning to cut a total of 1000 jobs. 700 jobs have already been cut in the course of 2024, with a further 300 jobs to follow by the beginning of 2025. The company currently employs around 5000 people in Austria. The measures are painful, but are considered necessary to secure KTM’s economic future.
Support through restructuring proceedings
The reorganization proceedings of KTM AG are closely linked to the European restructuring proceedings of Pierer Industrie AG, which were initiated in accordance with the Restructuring Regulation (ReO). This procedure is the first of its kind in Austria and offers companies that are at risk of insolvency but not insolvent the opportunity to reorganize their finances. Pierer Industrie AG, to which KTM belongs, has liabilities amounting to 250 million euros, which are to be restructured. According to Pierer Mobility AG, however, the group is not over-indebted.
Only certain creditors are affected by this procedure, while all other liabilities will be serviced as agreed. The aim is to maintain ongoing operations and avoid insolvency.
CEO Stefan Pierer: “I am fighting for my life’s work”
Stefan Pierer, CEO of KTM AG and Pierer Mobility AG, emphasized the importance of the restructuring measures for the future of the company. In a statement, he said: “The KTM brand is my life’s work and I will fight for it.” Together with Co-CEO Gottfried Neumeister, who has been in office since September 2024, Pierer wants to put the company back on the road to success. Neumeister praised the passion of the employees and emphasized their key role in the restructuring: “Now it’s about making the company robust for the future.”
Rumors about investors denied
In recent weeks, there has been speculation about a possible investment in KTM by Red Bull heir Mark Mateschitz. However, these rumors have been firmly denied by Pierer Mobility AG. The core shareholders, including Pierer Bajaj AG, stand behind the company and are working together on bridging financing to get through this difficult phase.
Conclusion: Challenges as opportunities
KTM AG is facing a decisive turning point. The restructuring process is an opportunity to stabilize the company economically and emerge stronger from the crisis. While the measures appear drastic, those responsible see them as a necessary foundation for the future of Europe’s largest motorcycle manufacturer. “We are making a pit stop for the future,” says Pierer. The next few months will show whether KTM can find its way back onto the road to success.
