The Insta 360 one R is a modular and waterproof ActionCam, which allows you to adapt it to a wide variety of situations and requirements.
Modular system with 4K wide angle lens
The Insta 360 one R includes a 4K wide-angle lens as known from conventional ActionCams. The battery, control element and camera are made up of individual parts that can be easily plugged together. The advantage of this is that the control element, which is equipped with a touch screen, can be positioned as you need it. If you have mounted the cam on the mirror of your motorcycle and aligned it to the front, the screen can also point to the back, so that you can monitor the shot or the alignment of the camera. Alternatively, you can also film yourself and align the display so that you can see yourself. The modular system is waterproof up to 5m without any additional housing. So a ride in the rain is no problem at all. With the included mounting bracket the single parts cannot fall apart.

360 degree function
The Insta 360 one R is available in different versions, with the 360 degree version being the most popular. In addition to the 4K wide angle lens, the bundle also includes a 360 degree lens that takes 360 degree shots of the surroundings through two lenses. So you don’t have to worry about whether the camera is aligned correctly or not. There is always everything in the picture and you can decide afterwards what to see in a later video.
The 360 degree video could be uploaded to YouTube or Facebook and viewers could freely browse the video. If the video was taken with the camera attached to the mirror, the viewer can decide for himself whether he looks in the direction of travel, towards the driver or somewhere else.
360 degree shot in classic view
It is also possible to use the 360 degree video material for a “classic” view. You could show the view forward to the road, but you could also fade in the view to the driver at any time. Both views at the same time would be possible, or camera movements as well as panning, even though the camera did not move during the recording. Here, however, only a part of the entire image material is shown, which is why the one R shoots in 5.7K, so that even with a partial view a very good FullHD image “remains”.

1 inch sensor
Another module that you can buy in a bundle or separately is the 1 inch sensor, which is supposed to offer even better image quality than the 4K wide angle module. Since the module is not available to me, it could not be tested.
Equipped with this sensor the Insta 360 one R also records in 5.7K. If you “only” need a 4K image, there is the possibility to zoom into the image. Due to the larger sensor the images should be even better in low light conditions than with the 4K module.
Extremely easy to use, switch on and get started with or without gyro function
The camera has a very good internal image stabilization, so that you do not have to edit the image material afterwards. Settings can be made using the app or the touch screen. Once set, you usually don’t need to change anything for future shots.

360 degrees – always everything in the picture and many possibilities
It is especially easy with the 360 degree module. Here you don’t have to align the camera exactly, since it records everything around it anyway. You only have to pay attention that there is nothing in the immediate vicinity on the sides of the camera, because the cam cuts the two shots of the front and back camera digitally together. If something is too close to the cut line, it can lead to errors or things can be cut off.
However, this is typical for 360 degree cameras and the Insta 360 one R is top of the class in this area.
Alignment not necessary
The camera does not need to be aligned horizontally in 360 degree mode either, because it automatically aligns the image accordingly (if you want). Theoretically you only have to fix the cam in any position and start recording, the rest can be adjusted later during video editing. You can also decide afterwards if the recording is gyroscopically stabilized, i.e. if the recording is always in water or if it tilts.
For example, if you film yourself while riding a motorcycle, you can decide later whether the view leans into the curve, as it would be with a normal ActionCam, or whether the video view remains straight and only the motorcyclist leans into the curve, so that you can see his leaning more clearly.
Using the same shot in different ways
A 360 degree shot can be used as a 360 degree view or as a classic view. Whether gyroscopically stabilized or incl. oblique view, each image can be used in different ways. With other cameras you have to decide in advance what the final image should look like. Once defined, you will only get this recording. With the Insta 360 one R you don’t have to make any adjustments and can use the recording for all kinds of different purposes. This is an extreme advantage.

Currently the Insta 360 one R is one of the best ActionCams on the market, no matter if you are referring to ActionCams only or 360 degree cameras. Especially the easy handling, the continuous support with regular updates and the many functions for special effects in the app let it stand out at the moment.
If you want to use a 360-degree camera in addition to a normal action cam, there is currently no way around the Insta 360 one R. Besides the performance, it is also convincing in terms of price.
