Headlight problem on BMW R 18: Comprehensive recall in the USA

There is currently an important safety notice for owners of the legendary BMW R 18 motorcycle model, especially the R 18 B and R 18 Transcontinental variants: a comprehensive recall has been initiated in the USA due to a problem with the main headlight.

Background to the recall

The cause of the recall is a defect in the headlamp, more specifically in the low beam.  BMW USA has determined that the reflector mounting points in the headlamp, which are stressed by normal vibration during operation, can become damaged over time.  This can lead to reflector breakage.  The result: restricted visibility for the driver and a potential risk of dazzling oncoming traffic.

Extent and time frame

A total of 2,369 motorcycles produced between March 24, 2021 and December 28, 2023 are affected.  This number represents 100% of the R 18 B and R 18 Transcontinental models manufactured in the USA during this period.  The recall, which currently only affects the USA, is being closely monitored as similar problems could occur in other markets.

Symptoms and customer reactions

Drivers may notice various signs of the problem, including a rattling in the headlights, a vibrating low beam or a change in road lighting.  BMW has received a total of eight customer complaints, 72 warranty claims and 68 dealer reports on this issue as of December 22, 2023.

Measures and customer information

BMW is currently developing a remedial program and has already informed its dealer networks.  From February 13, 2024, the affected owners will be contacted by the dealers.  It is important to know that all repairs will be free of charge for customers.  In addition, BMW has issued a delivery stop notice for the affected models, meaning that no new motorcycles may be sold or delivered until the recall service has been completed.

Contact options for owners

Owners can contact BMW Customer Service in North America at 1-800-525-7417.  Alternatively, owners can call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
