New BMW S 1000 RR 2027 – outlook for the next superbike generation

BMW is preparing for the next technological leap in the superbike segment.  On Friday, May 23, 2025 at 7 p.m., BMW Motorrad will unveil a new concept bike at the traditional Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este on Lake Como.  The first teaser images already suggest a new generation of the BMW S 1000 RR or M 1000 RR - with a clear focus on uncompromising performance and state-of-the-art technology.

Dark silhouette with a clear statement

The published image shows a fully clad sports motorcycle with typical supersport attributes: large winglets at the front, a high rear end, a streamlined fairing with a large windshield and a split seat design.  Despite the deliberate play of shadows, the lines are clearly attributable to the RR series.  The “Born to lead” lettering underlines the aspiration to remain at the top of the supersport series motorcycles in the next generation.

Engine: Proven in-line four-cylinder engine with increased performance expected

In terms of drive, no radical changes are expected.  The currently installed in-line four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 999 cm³ already delivers 218 hp (160 kW) at 14,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 113 Nm in the BMW M 1000 RR 2025. A moderate increase in these values is expected for the 2027 generation in order to remain competitive in the WorldSBK competition.

For comparison: The current version of the S 1000 RR (2025) delivers 209 hp (154 kW) and 112.6 Nm of torque.  These values correspond to approximately 154 kW = 209 hp and 112.6 Nm, which equates to around 83 lb-ft.  Increased top performance could not only make sense in terms of racing success, but could also play a role for the market of trackday drivers and ambitious hobby racers.

Chassis: New chassis in the works?

After Toprak Razgatlıoğlu won the 2024 Superbike World Championship title, it became known that BMW used a prototype chassis during the season that was not homologated.  Due to the regulations, they later had to revert to the production-based frame, which, according to the works driver, repeatedly led to criticism.  It is therefore likely that BMW will also develop a fundamentally new chassis concept for the next generation of the S 1000 RR – with a focus on better stiffness, feedback and weight distribution.

While the concept bike itself has not yet revealed any details about the frame, the familiar design with bridge frame, upside-down telescopic fork and aluminum swingarm remains the benchmark for the time being.  However, the question is whether BMW will not only test a new frame layout this time, but also bring it into series production.

Lightweight construction remains mandatory: under 200 kg thanks to carbon & titanium

The current M 1000 RR weighs 194 kg (427 lbs) ready to ride with carbon rims and a full 16.5-liter tank.  In order to master the balancing act between ever-increasing performance and maximum handling, BMW continues to rely on consistent lightweight construction.  In addition to carbon, titanium, aluminum and, in some cases, magnesium will also be used.  The goal thus remains clear: a ready-to-drive weight of less than 200 kg combined with increased stability.

Electronics & aerodynamics: state of the art

Superbikes are traditionally regarded as technology carriers.  The electronic equipment on the upcoming S 1000 RR and M 1000 RR will also be state-of-the-art.  Traction control, cornering ABS, launch control, slide control, configurable riding modes and integrated telemetry functions will also be part of the package, as will optimized aerodynamics with further developed winglets.  These should not only generate downforce at high speeds, but also improve stability when braking and turning.

Model roadmap: S 1000 RR 2027 comes first, M version to follow

According to internal information, the market launch of the new BMW S 1000 RR is planned for spring 2027.  The M 1000 RR as a homologated racing version is likely to follow a year later – in 2028 at the earliest. The early presentation of the concept bike in 2025 is probably intended both to keep interest alive and to incorporate feedback from experts and the public into the final development.

Conclusion: evolution with the potential for revolution

With the new concept, BMW shows that the brand wants to further consolidate its position in the superbike segment – both on the road and on the racetrack.  Even though no technical details are yet known, the clear design language and the deliberate staging suggest a mature, powerful and future-oriented motorcycle.
