According to patent drawings, BMW is working on developing a kind of crumple zone for the motorcycle, that will absorb at least a part of the impact speed at an accident.
According to the patent, the front wheel is converted into a crumple zone. At a impact, the wheel usually turns to the side. A V-shaped bracked behind the wheel is designed to prevent this, which allows the wheel to act as a small crumple zone.
The V-shaped construction could further assist in reducing the impact speed.
It must be clear that such a system cannot work miracles and can only help to a limited extent, but even a small improvement is an improvement. However, it is unclear whether it will make its way into series production.
