Focus on versatility and accessibility
The F 450 GS presents itself as an all-rounder that is designed to impress both on asphalt and off-road. According to BMW, the model combines driving dynamics, touring comfort, everyday practicality, and off-road qualities in a compact platform. Striking GS design elements such as the LED headlight with “X” daytime running lights and the characteristic flyline ensure high recognition value within the GS series. High-quality components such as magnesium parts and various equipment options round off the concept.
Newly developed two-cylinder engine
At the heart of the BMW F 450 GS is a completely new, smooth-running two-cylinder in-line engine with a 135-degree crankpin offset and a balance shaft. With 35 kW (48 hp) at 8,750 rpm (48 hp ≈ 35 kW) and a maximum torque of 43 Nm at 6,750 rpm, the engine delivers powerful performance in its segment. This corresponds to an output of approximately 47.6 hp and 43 Nm. The displacement is 420 cm³. BMW specifies an average fuel consumption of 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers. Thanks to the 14-liter tank, this results in a theoretical range of over 350 kilometers. The ready-to-ride weight is 178 kg (approximately 392 lbs).
Easy Ride Clutch (ERC) and new transmission technology
One technical highlight is the Easy Ride Clutch (ERC), a further development of the centrifugal clutch. It engages the clutch depending on the speed and allows gear changes without manual clutch operation – an advantage when starting, shifting gears, and off-road. The ERC is fitted as standard in the “GS Trophy” variant and is available as an option for other variants. Together with the BMW Quickshifter Pro, fast gear changes are possible without using the clutch lever. The new six-speed transmission with X-ring chain as secondary drive rounds off the drive concept.
Electronics package and riding modes
BMW equips the F 450 GS with the “Rain,” “Road,” and “Enduro” riding modes as standard. In addition, ABS Pro, Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), and engine drag torque control (MSR) are included ex works. From the “Exclusive” equipment variant upwards, the “Enduro Pro” mode is also available, which is tailored to coarse-tread off-road tires and off-road use and allows the ABS on the rear wheel to be switched off.
New chassis concept
The completely redesigned chassis is based on a lightweight but robust steel trellis frame with welded forged parts. The engine is integrated as a load-bearing element, which reduces weight. The front wheel is guided by a torsion-resistant KYB upside-down telescopic fork (43 mm diameter), while the rear wheel is guided by a hollow cast aluminum double-sided swing arm with a central spring strut, adjustable spring base and rebound damping, as well as travel-dependent damping. In the “Sport” and “GS Trophy” variants, the fork is also adjustable in rebound and compression.
Wheels, brakes, and ergonomics
The F 450 GS comes standard with lightweight cast aluminum wheels with tubeless tires in sizes 100/90-19 at the front and 130/80-17 at the rear. Original accessories such as cross-spoke wheels are available as options. The brake system is from Brembo: at the front there is a single disc brake (310 mm diameter) with a four-piston fixed caliper, at the rear a 240 mm disc with a single-piston floating caliper. ABS Pro is standard.
Optimal ergonomics are ensured by a sophisticated ergonomic triangle, a butted aluminum handlebar, and a versatile seat. Three different seat heights of 830 mm, 845 mm, and 865 mm are available. Adjustable hand levers, a handlebar riser, and individually adjustable footrests and levers allow flexible adaptation to different rider requirements and riding styles.
Modern equipment and connectivity
The F 450 GS comes factory-equipped with a 6.5-inch TFT screen with extensive connectivity functions, including Pure Ride Screen and Sport Screen with additional information on DTC, braking force, and lean angle. Telephony, navigation, and music control can also be used directly. All lighting, including LED daytime running lights, turn signals, and taillights, is based on LED technology. A USB-C charging socket is integrated into the cockpit as standard.
Heated grips and other comfort features are also included as standard. The range of accessories includes various windshield variants, luggage systems, engine protection, and other customization options.
Four equipment variants
The BMW F 450 GS is available in four variants:
- F 450 GS Base: In Cosmic Black, with cast wheels and standard equipment.
- F 450 GS Exclusive: Also in Cosmic Black, including off-road footrests, hand guards, plastic underride protection, Pro riding modes, Quickshifter Pro, and clear windshield.
- F 450 GS Sport: In Racing Red, enhanced with sports suspension with adjustable fork, off-road footrests, hand guards, engine protection, Pro riding modes, Quickshifter Pro, and clear windshield.
- F 450 GS Trophy: In Racing Blue metallic, as the top model with off-road footrests, white hand guards, sports suspension, tinted rally windshield, aluminum engine guard, and Easy Ride Clutch (ERC).
Conclusion
With the F 450 GS, BMW Motorrad is specifically targeting the needs of the A2 class and offering a well-balanced adventure bike with extensive technology, high-quality equipment, and practical versatility. The new GS generation focuses on intuitive handling, modern design, and innovative solutions such as the Easy Ride Clutch, without sacrificing the GS’s typical robustness and touring capabilities.
