According to the patent, the new KTM compressor is primarily connected mechanically to the crankshaft, as with traditional compressors. However, KTM relies on an electrically controlled clutch that can disconnect the compressor from the crankshaft when necessary. In this case, an electric motor takes over the drive of the compressor and ensures immediate boost pressure – regardless of the engine speed. Especially at low speeds, when the engine does not provide enough power, the electric motor kicks in and ensures immediate power delivery.
Flexible system: Three operating modes for optimum efficiency
The KTM system has a so-called decoupler that automatically decides which drive mode offers the best performance depending on the driving situation. There are three operating modes in total:
Mechanical: The compressor is driven directly by the crankshaft.
Electric: At low speeds or under special requirements, the electric motor takes over.
Combined: In a third mode, the compressor can be driven both mechanically and electrically at the same time to achieve maximum performance.
This flexible concept makes it possible to select the optimal operating mode at any time, which should significantly improve efficiency and responsiveness.
Weight and efficiency advantages over competing systems
Another advantage of the KTM system is that when the electric motor is not needed to drive the compressor, it can be used as a generator for the on-board battery. This makes it possible to use a smaller and lighter battery – a factor that is particularly important for lightweight motorcycles. By comparison, Honda’s fully electric compressor in the V3R delivers instant torque but requires a larger and heavier battery, which has a negative impact on the overall weight.
Technological comparison: KTM, Honda, and Yamaha
While Yamaha’s E-Turbo uses an electrically pre-winding turbocharger designed to eliminate turbo lag and increase performance as in modern car systems, KTM is going its own way. KTM’s patented solution combines the advantages of a classic mechanical compressor with those of an electric motor without having to accept the disadvantages of a heavy battery.
According to the patent, KTM initially intends to use the new technology for a single-cylinder enduro engine. However, thanks to its modular design, the system could easily be used in various KTM engines. This opens up new possibilities for achieving greater performance with lower emissions, especially for small displacement engines. This is a particularly relevant factor in light of the increasingly stringent emission regulations in the EU.

With the new electrically assisted compressor, KTM is pursuing an innovative approach in the field of forced ventilation for motorcycles.
