From idea to reality: a collaboration with a strong social background
The initiative for this project came from BMW Motorrad dealer Witzel in Sennfeld and Thomas Draxler, founder of JESUS-BIKER®. Together, they developed the vision of a symbolic motorcycle that would be auctioned off for a good cause. BMW Motorrad Germany provided an R 18 Transcontinental for this purpose, which was then extensively customized.
The bike’s special features include a pearlescent white paint finish and the Vatican coat of arms. The customization transformed the touring motorcycle into a truly unique piece.
Peace Ride to Rome: A spiritual journey with a social mission
The symbolic start was marked by a so-called “Peace Ride,” which began on August 31, 2025, at Motorrad Witzel in Sennfeld. The tour led via Schaafheim, Altötting, and Verona to Rome and was accompanied by several church services. Representatives of JESUS-BIKER®, BMW Motorrad, and BMW Witzel took part in the ride. Most participants rode in style on BMW R 18 models provided by BMW Motorrad Germany.
Personal handover by BMW top management
Following the general audience in St. Peter’s Square in Rome, the unique motorcycle was officially handed over on September 3. Markus Flasch, CEO of BMW Motorrad, and Michael Sommer, Head of BMW Motorrad Germany, personally presented the motorcycle to Pope Leo XIV. He signed the tank and gave his papal blessing.
Flasch commented on the project, saying, “What initially sounded like a crazy idea has developed into a great charity campaign. I am delighted that BMW Motorrad can do its part to support aid projects for children in Madagascar with our R18 Transcontinental. And I would like to express my sincere thanks to Pope Leo XIV for taking the time to actively support this project.”
Exhibition in Munich and planned auction
Before the unique motorcycle is auctioned by Sotheby’s in October, it can be viewed at BMW Welt in Munich between September 15 and October 7, 2025. The auction itself is being organized by Missio Austria, with all proceeds going to children’s aid projects in Madagascar.
