Yamaha celebrates big comeback at the Suzuka 8 Hours 2025 – with retro livery and strong riders
After a six-year break, Yamaha is finally making its official return to the legendary Suzuka 8 Hours in 2025 – one of the most traditional and prestigious endurance races in the world. The factory team is using this comeback not only as a sporting highlight, but also as a central element of the brand’s 70th anniversary celebrations. Yamaha is relying on a successful mix of nostalgia, motorsport history and a top-class line-up.
Return to the iconic circuit after a long absence
Yamaha’s last participation in the Suzuka 8 Hours, the Japanese round of the FIM Endurance World Championship, dates back to 2019. For many fans of the brand, this long absence was a painful loss, as Yamaha had a strong influence on the race in the past – not least through several victories and legendary appearances.
The Yamaha Factory Racing Team will now be back at the start from August 1 to 3, 2025. The timing is no coincidence: the company is celebrating its 70th anniversary on July 1, 2025 – so the race will be a historic statement on the calendar just ten days later.
A tribute to the year 1999
To celebrate this anniversary in style, Yamaha has dug deep into its own motorsport history. The YZF-R1 with which the team will be competing is painted in a classic red and white livery – a direct reminiscence of the legendary YZF-R7, which was released in limited numbers in 1999. This color scheme not only evokes memories, but also has a personal connection: team manager Wataru Yoshikawa himself rode the R7 at the Suzuka 8 Hours in 1999.
Even the team logo is not a modern design, but an updated version of the logo that Yamaha used at the end of the 1990s. From the team clothing to the pit equipment to the presentation, the focus is consistently on a retro look – Yamaha is staging the comeback with great attention to detail.
Strong line-up with Suzuka experience
Yamaha has pulled off a real coup with the signing of Katsuyuki Nakasuga. The now 43-year-old veteran is not only a four-time winner of the Suzuka 8 Hours, but was also part of the team that clinched Yamaha’s last home race success to date in 2018. He also boasts an impressive 89 race wins and twelve championship titles in the JSB1000 class of the All Japan Road Race Championship.
The other two rider positions are to be filled by current riders from MotoGP and the Superbike World Championship. Names have not yet been officially announced, but one thing is certain: Yamaha intends to attack with full factory power and top riders.
Another detail with symbolic power
Many connoisseurs will immediately notice the starting number 21, which is prominently displayed on the R1’s fairing. This number is no coincidence, but a tribute to the year 1985, when Yamaha competed in Suzuka with the then sponsor TECH 21 – a brand of the Shiseido cosmetics group. The iconic combination of technology and lifestyle is still unforgotten today and gives this year’s appearance an additional emotional depth.
Conclusion: Yamaha focuses on emotion and experience
With its comeback at the Suzuka 8 Hours 2025, Yamaha combines history and the present in an impressive way. The decision to opt for a retro design and a highly symbolic team structure is not only a nod to its own history, but also a clear signal: Yamaha is serious about making a comeback on the big endurance stage.
It remains to be seen whether the team will be able to compete for victory again in 2025 – but with experienced riders, proven technology and a deep connection to the race track, the conditions are promising.
