Motorcycle racing focuses on sustainability: BMW Motorrad Motorsport develops alternative fuels.

Use of sustainable fuels in WorldSBK from 2024.

The FIM World Superbike Championship (WorldSBK) is setting the course for greater sustainability, requiring that at least 40 percent of the fuels used consist of non-fossil components from the 2024 season onwards. BMW Motorrad Motorsport is preparing intensively for this and is working closely with the company NORDOEL as part of the federally funded joint project DeCarTrans to develop alternative fuels.

DeCarTrans – Circular carbon economy in transport

The DeCarTrans project aims to produce renewable fuels on an industrial scale in order to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the existing fleet. BMW Motorrad Motorsport and NORDOEL are jointly researching and developing alternative fuels in order to develop a high-performance fuel for racing and everyday use.

Test procedures and special requirements in racing

BMW Motorrad Motorsport subjects NORDOEL’s alternative fuels to intensive testing procedures at the limits to prepare them for use in racing and in conventional combustion engines. The requirements for an alternative fuel in racing are higher than in series production, especially with regard to combustion, knock sensitivity, and performance.

From racing to the road

BMW Motorrad Motorsport is working closely with its production colleagues to share the results of alternative fuel testing. The goal is to develop a racing fuel that is also suitable for production vehicles. Initial tests with the new alternative fuels on the race track are planned for later this year in order to prepare optimally for use in the 2024 WorldSBK season.
