The topic of traffic noise is not only hotly debated in Europe. A maximum noise level could also be set in the Philippines, but it would apply to all road users.
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is working out new rules and regulations as part of the introduction of a new Motor Vehicle Inspection System (MVIS), which will decide on the registration of new vehicles and the inspection of existing ones. One of the items is a volume level of 99 dB. This point is very controversial, as a limit of 115 dB was previously in place.
In addition, guidelines are now to specify how exactly the volume is to be checked. According to the specification, future measurements should be taken at a distance of 0.5 m and at a 45 degree angle from the tip of the rear silencer. The sound level meter must be parallel to the ground and the engine is revved up to 2,000 – 2,500 rpm.
Since no further details have been announced so far, it is safe to assume that the new volume control will apply to all vehicles and also regardless of size or engine displacement.
