GSX-8S as a flexible platform
Suzuki has been successfully relying on modular design for some time now. The best example of this is the GSX-8S with its 776 cc in-line two-cylinder engine, from which several models have since emerged – including the fully enclosed GSX-8R and the V-Strom 800 adventure series. The flexible platform offers ideal conditions for creating a retro model.
The current GSX-8S produces around 83 hp (61 kW) in the standard version, which provides sufficient scope to appeal to different target groups. The torque is 78 Nm. In terms of weight, the GSX-8S weighs in at around 202 kg (approx. 445 lbs), making it an agile motorcycle that appeals to many riders.
Retro design: classic or modern interpretation?
What exactly the retro model could look like remains unclear at the moment. Suzuki could take its cue from the classic design of the 70s and give the GSX-8S a round lamp, a long seat and an upright riding position. Alternatively, a more modern interpretation in the style of the Suzuki Katana would also be conceivable – including sharper lines and a rectangular headlight.
Another option would be a fairing in the style of the historic GSX-R750 from the 80s, similar to what Yamaha did with the XSR900 GP. Suzuki had already pursued a similar concept around 25 years ago, when a retro motorcycle based on the Inazuma 1200 appeared with the GS1200SS.
A replacement for the ageing SV650?
So far, the SV650 has taken on the retro role at Suzuki, especially the semi-disguised SV650X, which is slowly reaching its limits due to its age. Although the SV650 recently still met the Euro 5 standards, an update to the stricter Euro 5+ regulations, which have been in force since the beginning of 2025, is still pending. With the modern parallel twin concept of the GSX-8 series, Suzuki could replace the SV650 in the future.
Suzuki relies on a proven strategy
The fact that Suzuki relies on successful base models and develops versatile offshoots from them is already demonstrated by the GSX-S1000, from which the sporty GT versions and the retro Katana model, among others, emerged. This strategy could now also be applied to the mid-range GSX-8S model.
At present, it remains to be seen whether Suzuki will actually bring out a retro model based on the GSX-8S. However, the rumors seem realistic and logical. When exactly Suzuki could present the model is still open.
