The Sudelfeld closure becomes reality: a new traffic regulation comes into force on April 30th.  Motorcycles will no longer be allowed to drive on the Sudelfeldstraße in the direction of Bayrischzell between 11 am and 9 pm.  The opposite direction will remain open.

Valid section of the road

The closure affects the area from the junction of the district road RO52 in the district of Rosenheim to the Miesbach district border.  This section is one of the most popular parts of the Sudelfeld route among motorcyclists.

Exceptions and validity

The closure applies daily from April 30 to October 31. From 2026, the closure will be implemented from April 1.  Mopeds and mopeds are exempt from the regulation.  Exceptions are possible in individual cases, provided special authorization is available.

Legal framework

The closure is designed as a “traffic trial” for two years.  It is therefore not subject to the same formal hurdles as a permanent regulation and is more difficult to challenge legally.  In practice, this means that motorcyclists have fewer opportunities to take legal action against the measure.

Reason: focus on safety

According to Rosenheim District Administrator Otto Lederer, “the protection of life and health is paramount”.  In the official press release, the measure is justified by the accident trend between 2018 and 2024.  During this period, there were 97 accidents, including two fatalities and 40 serious injuries.

There is no differentiated analysis of the figures.  Critics point out that the accident figures have risen sharply in recent years, especially since the closure of the Kesselberg.  Some of the traffic there has shifted to other routes such as the Sudelfeld.

Discussion about noise as the true background

Even though the official justification primarily cites safety reasons, many motorcyclists and local residents see noise pollution as the real cause.  Smaller villages on the approach to the route are particularly affected.  In the press release, the issue of noise is only mentioned in passing.

The suspicion is that safety arguments are being used because it is more difficult to legally enforce a closure for noise protection reasons.

No involvement of the motorcycle community

The decision was made by the Rosenheim and Miesbach district authorities together with the police, building authorities and the government of Upper Bavaria.  Representatives of motorcyclists or interest groups were not involved.  Despite the community’s willingness to engage in dialog, no contact was made by the authorities.

Political support and criticism

CSU member of parliament Daniela Ludwig described the closure as “overdue” and emphasized that she had campaigned for its implementation.  This is in contrast to earlier statements by the CSU, in which they clearly positioned themselves against general driving bans for motorcyclists.

Possible consequences

A shift of traffic to other routes is considered likely.  Although the press release announces that the intention is to monitor alternative routes, no concrete data has yet been collected.  It remains to be seen whether the decision can be reversed if new hotspots emerge.

Reactions from the scene

Protest actions are already being discussed on social networks.  There are no official dates yet, but the debate is ongoing.  The closure is seen by many as a symbol of a transport policy that favors blanket measures instead of differentiated solutions.
