It's official: the excitement surrounding the new faces of GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3 for 2024 has been sealed. The future rider lineup, which includes Pedro Acosta and Augusto Fernández, is a reflection of the team's single-minded focus on emerging talent and expertise. But the decision was not an easy one, especially given the developments and dynamics that the MotoGP world has seen over the past season.

Pedro Acosta: A star in the MotoGP sky

Pedro Acosta, former Moto3 World Champion and current leader of the Moto2 World Championship with a remarkable lead of 50 points, has taken the motorsport world by storm.  With a rapid rise through the ranks and a performance that has brought him considerable success in just his third full season on the global stage, the 19-year-old is showing an exceptional talent that seems predestined for his leap into MotoGP in 2024.

Augusto Fernández: The continuation of an impressive journey

Majorcan Augusto Fernández has impressed with consistent, high-scoring performances and highlights such as a 4th place finish at the French Grand Prix and a remarkable 7th position in the challenging rainy conditions in Japan.  The reigning Moto2 World Champion will remain loyal to GASGAS and with his ability to develop and maturity will move up to next season’s premier class alongside Acosta.

Pol Espargaró: a new role with a weighty presence

The path that 32-year-old Pol Espargaró is taking is a mixture of dedication and an unselfish view of the future of motorsport.  Although the Spaniard was originally contracted to GASGAS for 2024, his role next year includes six wildcard appearances as a test and reserve rider.  Despite a string of setbacks and challenges, including five crashes at Misano and a 15th-place finish at Motegi, Espargaró looks forward with an attitude of collegiality and support for emerging talent.  He stresses that his decision to take a step back was the result of joint discussions and a recognition of the contractual challenges of the Pierer Group.

Difficult decisions and future prospects

With only two spots available for 2024 and a pool of three top-notch drivers, GASGAS and Pierer Mobility AG leaders were challenged to make difficult decisions and find a path that supported both short- and long-term goals.  The strategy of letting the riders fight for second place at GASGAS Tech3 for a few Grand Prix, and subsequent performances and events, ultimately led to the current developments and decisions.

Final thoughts

The realignment of GASGAS and Pierer Mobility AG presents a fascinating mix of experience, young talent and strategic planning.  While young stars Acosta and Fernández continue their journey in MotoGP, Espargaró remains an integral part of the project, ready to share his expertise and knowledge with the next generation.

GASGAS Motorsport Director Pit Beirer put it succinctly, “2024 will be about [Acosta] learning to take the next step with the big boys in MotoGP.”  And as the new and familiar faces prepare for another electrifying season, the motorsport world remains excited to see what the future holds for these remarkable athletes and the GASGAS team.
