Scenic, but loud and dangerous
The parking bays on the Aasrücken were long regarded as a meeting place with spectacular panoramic views: To the south, the view extends to the Swabian Alb, to the north across the Rems Valley to the Swabian Forest. Numerous motorcyclists and sports car drivers would gather here at weekends in particular to enjoy the view together – and often to show off their vehicles.
However, the meeting point increasingly developed into a problem. According to official information, dangerous driving maneuvers, speeding and even illegal races were repeatedly taking place next to the popular L 1075 country road. Spectators filmed so-called stunts and risky overtaking maneuvers – scenes that are said to have ultimately led to several traffic accidents. As a result, the town of Göppingen was forced to take action.
Massive barriers in response to years of complaints
The barrier measure was taken after longstanding complaints from residents who suffered from the engine noise. Citizens’ initiatives and municipal committees had repeatedly drawn attention to the situation. Despite appeals for more consideration and intensive police checks with speed monitoring, the behavior of some road users could not be sustainably changed.
The barriers that have now been erected consist of anti-skid walls filled with chippings – familiar from freeway construction – and weigh several tons each. This is to prevent the barriers from being removed without authorization. Access to the parking bays is therefore effectively impossible. Removal would only be possible with heavy equipment such as a crane.
Consideration versus freedom: a mixed picture
While many residents report noticeable relief, there are also critical voices. Pleasure drivers, convertible excursionists and responsible motorcyclists see the closure as a collective punishment. They complain that they are being denied access to one of the most beautiful vantage points in the Stauferland region due to the misconduct of a few.
The town of Göppingen emphasizes that this is initially a temporary measure. Together with the district councils from Hohenstaufen and Maitis, the traffic inspection committee has decided to closely monitor the effects of the closure. An initial evaluation is to take place at the beginning of the summer vacation.
A step with a signal effect
The city council points out that the decision to close the road was not taken lightly by anyone. However, in view of the increasing traffic hazards and massive noise pollution, there was no other option. The appeal to all visitors: show understanding – and be considerate. Whether the Aasrücken will be accessible to everyone again in the future now depends on how the next few weeks go.
