Continuous development and test results
The last five years have been marked by continuous development of this technology. Extensive testing, both in the laboratory and in real-world applications, has resulted in several significant improvements:
- Reduced wear and high load capacity
Comparative tests according to ASTM D4172 and D2783 show that the diameter of the wear spot could be reduced to an average of 0.28 mm with SCT ESTER oils. By comparison, mineral and PAO oils have values of 0.39 to 0.45 mm. The critical load limit was increased to 1,100 newtons (N) (equivalent to approximately 112 kg or 247 lbs) – with conventional oils, it is between 820 and 900 N (approx. 84–92 kg or 185–198 lbs). This results in improved abrasion resistance, even under extreme conditions.
- Improved oxidation stability and longer service life
PDSC tests (ASTM D6186) show a 20 to 30 minute longer induction time (OIT) at 210 °C compared to conventional Group III oils. This increased oxidation stability provides reliable protection, especially at high temperatures, such as those found in turbocharged or hybrid engines. In addition, the thermal decomposition of the oil is delayed, which extends its service life.
- Lower evaporation rate and lower volatility
NOACK volatility tests (ASTM D5800) show that the evaporation rate of ester formulas is 7.5–9%, while Group III oils reach 11–13%. This reduces oil consumption and ensures consistent viscosity over longer periods of use.
Wide range of applications for SCT ESTER technology
SCT ESTER technology is now used in a wide variety of areas:
- In motor oils, it supports a stable oil film – particularly suitable for start-stop systems and sporty driving.
- In transmission oils, it reduces scuffing, especially in modern DSG, CVT, and all-wheel drive transmissions.
- Hydraulic oils with SCT ESTER technology offer high thermal stability even under continuous load in construction and industrial applications.
- Special lubricants benefit from reliable lubrication in the presence of dirt, moisture, and temperature fluctuations when used in off-road vehicles, chainsaws, or in the marine sector.
