Royal Enfield HIM-E: Electric Himalayan nears production readiness

Royal Enfield continues to push ahead with the electrification of its adventure segment: The traditional Indian brand is currently testing the HIM-E, a fully electric version of the popular Himalayan, under real conditions in the high mountains. During a trip over the Khardung La, one of the highest motorable passes in the world (5,359 m / 17,582 ft), both the HIM-E and a potential new model with a combustion engine – the Himalayan 750 – were put through their paces. Also present: CEO B. Govindarajan and chief designer Mark Wells.

Recognizable design and technical refinement

The HIM-E is clearly based on the Himalayan series in terms of appearance, but features significant further developments. The extensive use of CNC-milled and forged aluminum parts is striking. Unlike earlier prototypes, which still relied on a trellis tube structure, the battery and electric motor now function as load-bearing elements. The swing arm is connected directly to the motor – a design that is becoming increasingly common in modern electric motorcycles.

The battery unit is visually inspired by the Flying Flea sub-brand, particularly with its distinctive cooling fins, which are based on the design of the Flying Flea FF-C6 and FF-S6. This design element gives the motorcycle not only a technical look, but also a unique appearance.

Chassis and components: High-quality equipment

The chassis of the HIM-E indicates serious off-road ambitions. Adjustable forks are used at the front, while an Öhlins shock absorber with external reservoir is used at the rear. This configuration promises long suspension travel and a high degree of adaptability to demanding terrain.

The front brake system apparently consists of a Nissin caliper and a 310 mm brake disc. This combination indicates high-quality standard equipment. The wheels have the standard format for adventure bikes: 19 inches at the front, 17 inches at the rear – fitted with deep-tread tires for off-road use.

Series production could be closer than expected

A first prototype of the HIM-E was presented at EICMA in 2023. At that time, it was still a heavily modified test vehicle. The photos that have now emerged, however, show a motorcycle that is almost ready for series production. The number and quality of the components used suggest that a market launch is not too far off.

It remains unclear whether the HIM-E is part of the recently announced collaboration with Qualcomm and other suppliers as part of the Flying Flea e-bike series. However, given the advanced stage of development, this variant appears to have been developed independently of this new platform.

What remains unclear?

There is still no official information on range, battery capacity, or price. The exact date for a market launch is also unknown. Royal Enfield will likely announce further details at the upcoming EICMA in the fall.

Conclusion

With the HIM-E, Royal Enfield is clearly positioning itself in the electric adventure bike segment. The motorcycle remains true to the classic Himalayan design language, but combines it with modern technology and high-quality equipment. It remains to be seen whether the HIM-E will match the riding qualities of its gasoline-powered predecessors – but it’s heading in the right direction.
