Cause of the problem
The recall was necessary because the fastening screws of the side case brackets are too short and therefore do not hold firmly enough to the motorcycle frame. As a result, the brackets can come loose and fall onto the road. This problem affects up to five units equipped with the mounting kit with part number 77 49 5 A6B 236.
Initial reports and investigation
The problem was first reported by a dealer outside the USA on May 21, 2024. An inspection revealed that the screws in the mounting kit were too short. A detailed technical investigation, including a comparison of design and CAD data, confirmed that the length of the screws had not been transferred correctly. This led to a discrepancy in the production drawings.
Reaction and measures taken by BMW
BMW responded on May 28, 2024 with a voluntary safety recall. To date, there have been no reports of accidents, injuries or complaints from customers in the USA in connection with this problem. There are also no known warranty claims. Dealers will replace the affected bolts with longer, correct bolts free of charge.
