Chain maintenance on motorcycles is an important, though mostly unloved and often neglected effort. Maintenance-free and therefore comfortable is rather the cardan drive. However, BMW has now developed a chain that has comparable characteristics to a cardan drive.

Just like normal X-ring chains, the M Endurance chain has a permanent lubricant filling between rollers and pins, enclosed by an X-ring. However, conventional X-ring chains require additional lubrication of the rollers. This is not necessary with M Endurance chain, nor is occasional re-tensioning due to normal wear and elongation.

New coating makes greasing redundant

The new chain does not require any additional lubrication, as a new coating material is used for the rollers.

Tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), also known as “industrial diamond”, is characterized by extreme hardness and resistance and is therefore classified between a DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coating and a pure diamond. A ta-C coating does not wear out in contrast to metal surfaces used so far, therefore lubrication is not necessary. Additionally, the ta-C coating has a reduced coefficient of friction.

Less maintenance and dirt, more comfort

Due to the dry lubrication properties and the eliminated wear, you have the comfort of a cardan drive in terms of maintenance. In addition, there is no need for cleaning work due to dirt accumulation, which is bound by the chain grease.

The M Endurance chain is now available in 525 pitch for the four-cylinder models BMW S 1000 RR and S 1000 XR. The recommended retail price is 286.08 €. The complete chain set including sprocket, chain wheel and small parts costs 425.59 €.

If the M Endurance chain is ordered ex works as an optional extra with a new motorcycle, then only 100 Euro surcharge will be charged (RRP).

Chains for other models are in preparation
