In Myanmar, citizens across the country protested a military coup that took place in February. The country’s civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was placed under house arrest by the military.
The military has declared a state of emergency that is expected to last for a year. They plan to hold an election during that time. However, since the coup came about because the military did not recognize the results of the last election, the population is correspondingly skeptical.
Since motorcycles and scooters are common means of transportation in Asia, a large motorcycle parade was held in the city of Dawei to protest the military coup. Countless bikers participated, despite the risk that the military could use force to end the demonstration.
In the video, you can see many holding their hands up, extending three fingers. This gesture from the Hunger Games film series is increasingly adopted in real life, as a symbol of anti-authoritarian solidarity. In this way, the citizens showed their solidarity with the demonstrators.
