Alex Márquez achieves breakthrough: First victory in the premier class
Alex Márquez was already in strong form in qualifying and then impressively demonstrated his racing intelligence on race Sunday. After a brief slip on the first lap, the Spaniard consistently fought his way back. He took the lead on lap eleven and did not allow his pursuers to get any closer. With an impressive pace, he steadily extended his lead and ultimately celebrated his first MotoGP victory by 1.6 seconds.
Alex Márquez commented emotionally: “This is the best birthday present ever. The first victory here in Jerez – fantastic! I’ll probably spend this night with the fans.”
With this success, Alex Márquez took the championship lead with 140 points – just ahead of his brother Marc, who has 139 points.
Marc Márquez: Crash costs world championship lead
The weekend initially went perfectly for Marc Márquez: after a commanding victory in the sprint on Saturday, everything pointed to a continuation of his strong season. However, a setback followed in the main race: on lap three, he crashed in turn eight while in a duel with Francesco Bagnaia. Although he resumed the race, he only managed twelfth place in the end (+20.890 seconds behind).
Marc Márquez was pensive: “If I want to fight for the world title, I simply can’t afford to make mistakes like that.”
Despite a damaged fairing, the eight-time world champion proved his fighting qualities and fought his way past Alex Rins to twelfth place. His conclusion: Despite the anger about the crash, pride in his brother Alex prevailed.
Fabio Quartararo back on the podium
Fabio Quartararo, who has recently experienced difficult times at Yamaha, was in top form at the Spanish Grand Prix. After his first pole position since 2022, the Frenchman took the lead at the start and held it for eleven laps. He only had to let Alex Márquez pass him in the end.
Quartararo was beaming after the race: “I really enjoyed that. It’s an incredible feeling to lead a race again and finish on the podium.”
His second place marked his best result since his last victory at the Sachsenring in 2022. Quartararo showed nerves of steel in the battle against Francesco Bagnaia and defended his place right to the finish.
Despite the joy, Quartararo remains realistic: “Our bike is still the same as in Austin. We mustn’t get too euphoric now.”
He is cautious about his chances for the next race in Le Mans, but wants to keep expectations low in order to avoid unnecessary pressure.
