Dramatic race start with contact between Marquez and Bezzecchi
The Hungarian Grand Prix got off to a turbulent start: after a mediocre start from pole position, Marc Marquez initially lost the lead to Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) and Franco Morbidelli (VR46 Ducati). There was a tricky moment in turn 2 when Marquez touched Bezzecchi’s rear wheel and almost crashed. However, the Spaniard stayed on his bike and slotted into third place.
In the following laps, the championship leader fought his way back to the front in a controlled manner. He overtook Morbidelli on lap 5 and finally prevailed against Bezzecchi on lap 11 to take the lead – a position he did not relinquish until the checkered flag.
Acosta strong, Bezzecchi fights – exciting battles behind Marquez
Behind the dominant winner, an intense battle for the remaining podium places developed. Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM) put in a strong performance and overtook Bezzecchi on lap 16 to secure second place. The Aprilia rider had to settle for third place, but was satisfied with his result afterwards – even though he reached his limits with the soft tires over the long distance.
Defending champion Jorge Martin (Pramac Ducati) impressed with a strong comeback from 16th on the grid to fourth place. He was followed by Luca Marini (Honda), Morbidelli, Brad Binder (KTM), and Pol Espargaro (GasGas). Francesco Bagnaia, Marquez’s teammate, had to settle for ninth place.
Numerous crashes and penalties characterize the race
The race was marked by numerous incidents. Alex Marquez and Enea Bastianini crashed in the early stages, the latter having already been hit with a double long lap penalty. Raul Fernandez, Joan Mir, Jack Miller (with two retirements) and Fermin Aldeguer also threw away potential top 10 results due to crashes. Johann Zarco crashed heavily on lap 21 but was uninjured.
Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) served his long lap penalty for a sprint collision but still managed to finish tenth.
World Championship: Marquez extends his lead
After the Hungarian Grand Prix, Marc Marquez now leads the World Championship standings with 455 points. His brother Alex is already 175 points behind with 280 points. Francesco Bagnaia follows in third place with 228 points. With seven race weekends remaining, Marquez is in a comfortable position in the title race.
Comments from the podium
Marc Marquez (Ducati, winner):
“I didn’t want to take any risks after the contact in turn 2. After that, I held back, waited, and then attacked when the conditions were right. I had a great rhythm—it was just perfect.”
Pedro Acosta (KTM, 2nd place):
“The team worked incredibly hard overnight and provided me with a completely new bike. Second place is the maximum today – I am very proud of my team.”
Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia, 3rd place):
“I gave it my all. The soft rear tire was a risk, but I wanted to try it. In the end, I lacked the pace. Nevertheless, I’m happy with the podium.”
Outlook: Next stop Misano
The MotoGP season continues in two weeks at the San Marino Grand Prix in Misano. There, we will see whether anyone can break Marquez’s dominance – or whether his impressive winning streak will continue.
