“MD’s” – Michael Dunlop gets his own corner on the TT circuit

The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy is known for its thrilling history, its dangerous bends and its legendary riders. One of them has now finally set himself a monument: Michael Dunlop, the most successful rider in the history of the TT, now has his own corner on the notorious Mountain Course.

A left-hand bend with great significance

In recognition of his historic 27th victory at the TT 2024, a previously nameless left-hand bend at Milestone 27 has now been officially named “MD’s” – a tribute to Michael Dunlop and his extraordinary career.  The new signpost was installed on the section of the track that Dunlop shaped with his driving skills over the years.

With the naming, Michael joins an exclusive group of racing legends to whom sections of the circuit have already been dedicated – including greats such as Giacomo Agostini, Mike Hailwood (MBE, GM), John McGuinness (MBE) and Joey Dunlop (OBE, MBE), Michael’s famous uncle.

A milestone in history: 27 victories at the TT

In 2024, Michael Dunlop made history when he equaled and eventually surpassed his uncle Joey’s 30-year-old record.  Joey Dunlop had replaced Mike Hailwood as the record holder in 1993 with his 14th victory.  In 2000, he finally achieved 26 victories – a figure that many thought was unattainable.

But Michael Dunlop proved the motorsport world wrong.  Within the space of just twelve months, he won his 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th TT – an achievement that catapulted him unchallenged to the top of the all-time leaderboard.

His victories span numerous classes and categories, underpinning his status as the most versatile and successful TT rider of all time.  In his active career, Dunlop has so far achieved 29 TT victories – a figure which, according to his own statement, does not necessarily represent the end.

Modesty despite greatness

Despite his success, Dunlop remains down-to-earth.  At the unveiling of the new track sign, he explained:

“I’ve often said that records are there to be broken – and that will happen again.  But for me it was always important that the Dunlop name remains at the top of the sport.  And that it was a Dunlop that pushed that brand forward.”

He added:

“It’s a real honor to be recognized in this way.  I’m not someone who seeks attention, but this means a lot to me.  The fact that this curve now bears this name forever is a real privilege.”

A legacy for future generations

“MD’s” is more than just a name on a sign – it is a symbol of the legacy of one of the greatest racing families in history.  Michael Dunlop’s achievements at the TT are not only impressive in terms of numbers, but also reflect a life dedicated to racing.

While many riders think of retiring after such a record, Michael emphasizes that it is far from over: “I still have a few more victories in me.  Who knows where it will take me.”

From now on, the new bend will be driven through every year at the Tourist Trophy – and is not only a reminder of an exceptional driver, but also of the importance of tradition, family and passion in motorsport.
