Review: The KLE 500 as a classic
The KLE 500 was first introduced in 1991 and remained part of the Kawasaki range until 2007. With up to 50 hp, it was a popular motorcycle that stood out above all for its versatility and robustness. Interest in enduros in this class is currently high again, as almost all major manufacturers now offer comparable models for the A2 class or have announced corresponding projects.
Technical basis: New 451 cc inline twin-cylinder engine
The new KLE 500 is to be powered by a modern inline twin-cylinder engine, as already used in Kawasaki’s current 500 models. According to the information available, the engine has a displacement of 451 cc, produces 45 hp (33 kW) at the corresponding speed and delivers a torque of 43 Newton meters (Nm). This means that the machine remains within the European A2 class registration limits (up to 48 hp).
Performance data:
- 45 hp (33 kW)
- Torque: 43 Nm
- 451 cm³ displacement
Chassis and equipment: Off-road-oriented design
The 21-inch front wheel with 90/90-21 tires, typical for enduro bikes, is striking. The rear wheel is likely to measure 18 inches, as is typical for this class, and be equipped with 140/70 or 140/80 tires. The upside-down telescopic fork is designed to offer long suspension travel, ensuring sufficient off-road capability. A single disc brake is used at the front for deceleration, which is standard for this motorcycle category.
Other features:
- Spoked wheels with dual-purpose tires
- Low-mounted fender
- Single disc brake at the front
Weight and handling
The ready-to-ride weight of the new Kawasaki KLE 500 is expected to be well under 200 kilograms (440.9 lbs). It is expected to weigh around 180 kilograms (396.8 lbs) with a full tank. This would make the new version noticeably lighter than its predecessor, which weighed 205 kilograms (452 lbs) with a full tank. The lower weight should ensure more agile handling, especially off-road.
- Weight: approx. 180 kg (396.8 lbs)
Market launch and price
The final production version of the new Kawasaki KLE 500 is expected to be unveiled at EICMA in November 2025. The market launch is scheduled for spring 2026. In terms of price, the new enduro is likely to be based on Kawasaki’s current 500 models. It is expected to cost around €7,000 (approx. $7,400).
- Planned price: approx. €7,000 (approx. $7,400)
- Market launch: Spring 2026
Classification and target group
With the new edition of the KLE 500, Kawasaki is returning to the off-road mid-range enduro segment. While the Versys series remains road-oriented, the KLE focuses on adventurous riders who also want to venture off the beaten track. The motorcycle is therefore aimed in particular at holders of an A2 driver’s license, for whom the range of full-fledged adventure bikes has been limited until now.
Conclusion
Kawasaki is reviving the KLE 500 and positioning it as a versatile mid-range enduro with modern technology and an off-road orientation. With a 451cc twin engine, 45 hp, 43 Nm of torque, a weight of around 180 kg, and a planned price of €7,000, the KLE 500 is set to appeal primarily to A2 riders who value flexibility and a spirit of adventure from 2026 onwards.
