Insta360 X5 Summer Update: New Tools and Improvements for Creatives and Motorcyclists

With the summer update for the Insta360 X5, the manufacturer is responding to feedback from the community and adding numerous features and improvements to its flagship 360-degree camera. The aim is to significantly enhance the user experience for professional filmmakers, ambitious hobbyists, and motorcyclists in particular. The update includes both software and hardware innovations designed to increase the camera's flexibility, usability, and endurance.

AdaptiveTone: Automatic exposure for difficult lighting situations

The newly introduced AdaptiveTone system optimizes exposure in high-contrast situations. The X5 records light data from both lenses separately and automatically adjusts the exposure depending on the perspective. According to the manufacturer, this enables natural shots in situations with differently lit image areas, such as when shooting through doors or windows. AdaptiveTone is available for 8K (30 fps) and 5.7K 360° videos (30 fps), PureVideo, and other modes.

PureVideo now also available for single-lens shots

The PureVideo feature, previously only available for 360° videos, is now also available in single-lens mode. According to Insta360, this allows for lower-noise and more color-accurate recordings even in poor lighting conditions – regardless of whether conventional videos or 360° content is being produced.

Improved battery life and new ultra battery

One of the most important hardware improvements is a new 2800 mAh ultra battery, which is said to provide 17% longer battery life. This allows up to 235 minutes of recording time (approximately 3 hours and 55 minutes) in endurance mode at 5.7K 24 fps. The battery weighs approximately 90 g (equivalent to about 0.20 lbs). The price is €57.99 or approximately $63 (as of July 2025, exchange rate: €1 = $1.09).

The endurance mode itself has also been further developed: up to two hours of continuous recording at 8K30fps is now possible. For 5.7K recordings (24 fps), the running time has been increased from 185 to 208 minutes.

ND filters for more control and cinematic effects

A special ND filter set (ND16, ND32, ND64) is now available for the X5, developed for the first time for a 360° camera. These filters help to create motion blur and precisely control exposure in bright lighting conditions. The set offers new possibilities for professional effects, especially for action-packed motorcycle shots. The filters are easy to install and replace.

Custom replacement lenses for the X5

Users can now equip their X5 with customizable replacement lenses. Choose from pre-made designs, your own photos, or AI-generated motifs. Availability varies by region and can be checked in the Insta360 Store.

Motorcycle-specific improvements

Limited BMW Motorrad Edition

In cooperation with BMW Motorrad, a limited X5 BMW Motorrad Edition has been released. The set includes a special design, custom accessories, and a pre-installed ultra battery. A mini remote control allows you to control the camera directly from the handlebars while riding.

Additional features for motorcyclists

  • Immersive shake stabilization: The new stabilization captures slight movements to more authentically reflect speed and terrain. It is available in Insta360 Studio and will soon be integrated into the app.
  • Sena headset integration: Compatible Sena helmet systems can be used to start or stop recording via voice command. Group conversations can also be recorded directly in the video.
  • Automatic license plate blurring: The software recognizes and blurs license plates with just a few taps, eliminating the need for time-consuming post-processing.
  • New GPS remote control: This combines camera control, live preview, GPS data recording, and a noise-canceling microphone.

Improvements for underwater shooting

The update also brings new features for divers:

  • Invisible Diving Housing Pro: According to the manufacturer, this offers an improved optical design for high-quality underwater shots. The market launch is still pending.
  • Buoyancy control accessory: An underwater drone currently in development is designed to keep the X5 stationary in the water to enable hands-free shooting.
  • AquaVision 3.0: The updated algorithm analyzes the image material and automatically suggests suitable color profiles.
  • Integration with SUUNTO dive computers: Real-time dive depth and performance data can be displayed directly in the video.

Simpler editing and cloud service

Improvements in Insta360 Studio and app

The Insta360 Studio software has been improved in terms of export speed and AI stitching. Particularly noteworthy is the quick preview function, which allows files to be viewed briefly in the file manager—a significant time saver when editing many clips.

The Insta360 app has also been revamped, including a new smart grid layout for albums, a modernized preview page, and additional editing tools.

Insta360+ cloud service

The Insta360+ cloud service, launched earlier this year, provides up to 2 TB of storage space, automatic backup, and online editing. Purchasers of an X5 or X5 BMW Motorrad Edition who activate the service by July 21 will receive 200 GB of cloud storage free of charge for 6 months. The offer is also available to existing customers after registration.

Conclusion

The summer update makes the Insta360 X5 more versatile and attractive – especially for motorcyclists, filmmakers, and outdoor enthusiasts. According to the manufacturer, the new features and hardware upgrades provide more creative freedom, longer battery life, and easier editing – both on land and underwater.
