Motorcycle racer becomes bank robber on two wheels
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film describes a story that stylistically falls somewhere between Heat and Hell or High Water. It centers on a former MotoGP rider whose career was abruptly ended by a serious accident. When his brother offers him the opportunity to make quick money by robbing banks, the protagonist—played by Chalamet—gets back on his bike. The robberies are carried out spectacularly on superbikes, providing the plot with a dynamic backdrop for motorcycle action.
The material is based on a previously unpublished book by author Jaime Oliveira, who is also set to write the screenplay for the film adaptation. In addition to the criminal plot, family tensions are also set to play a role, particularly the theme of an absent father.
Director with a busy schedule
James Mangold is considered a distinguished filmmaker who has repeatedly portrayed complex characters in action-packed contexts. In addition to High Side, he is currently involved in projects such as Swamp Thing for the DC Universe and a Star Wars film for Lucasfilm. It therefore remains unclear when filming for High Side will actually begin.
Skepticism among motorcycle fans
Motorcycle films have had a hard time winning over both critics and their target audience in the past. They are often accused of lacking authenticity in their treatment of the subject matter. It wasn’t until 2024 that another example appeared in One Fast Move, which failed to portray motorcycle racing credibly – including questionable lines of dialogue such as the advice: “Always either full throttle or full brakes.”
It remains to be seen whether High Side can break this negative streak. With a strong cast, an experienced director, and a fresh script, the chances are at least better than in previous attempts to bring motorcycle action to the screen in a realistic and exciting way.
