Project team and development
The development of the R 1300 R “TITAN” was in the hands of an interdisciplinary team: project manager Philipp Ludwig, vehicle designer Andreas Martin, and color and graphic designer Theresa Stukenbrock worked closely with experienced prototype builders Paul Summerer and Thomas Becker. The result is a custom bike that is extraordinary in both its design and technical implementation.
Unique sprint design with motorsport genes
The design of the R 1300 R “TITAN” is based on the new BMW R 1300 R, but completely reinterprets its stylistic elements. The aggressive monocoque picks up on the lines of the production model and transfers them to a racing machine that was specially designed for sprinting. The compact silhouette is centered around the 1300 boxer engine, which forms the visual and technical centerpiece. The forward weight distribution is designed to keep the front wheel in contact with the ground for as long as possible, even during heavy acceleration.
The striking graphics combine contrasting forged carbon with metallic blue accents to visualize movement and dynamism in a modern form. Visually and conceptually, the R 1300 R “TITAN” is reminiscent of a crouching big cat waiting to pounce.
Technology: Customization down to the last detail
An important part of the project was the collaboration with long-standing BMW partner Akrapovic. The result is a special titanium exhaust system that underscores the uncompromising racing orientation not only visually but also acoustically. The exhaust gases are discharged directly from the two cylinders, collected centrally under the motorcycle, and blown out in two streams at the raised rear—in the style of classic boxer models.
The specially manufactured Wilbers suspension with a long swing arm is low and hard. The aim is to optimally transfer the full power of the series engine to the asphalt, even in sprints. Additional power is provided by a visibly mounted nitrous oxide bottle between the two titanium rear silencers. At the push of a button, nitrous oxide is injected, which is intended to provide a significant boost in performance.
As soon as the nitrous oxide reaches the engine, the additional power is transferred to the rear wheel via the transmission and cardan shaft, catapulting the “TITAN” forward with maximum propulsion. Gear changes are precise, while the powerful Magura HC3 braking system safely slows down the excess energy at the end of the sprint.
Ergonomics and riding position
The footrests, which are set far back, offer the rider – project manager Philipp Ludwig in racing mode – optimal support. This makes the R 1300 R “TITAN” clearly designed for sprint and acceleration races, rather than everyday road use.
Conclusion
With the R 1300 R “TITAN,” BMW Motorrad demonstrates what is technically and creatively possible within the framework of an individual project. This one-of-a-kind bike combines motorsport technology, innovative design, and consistent implementation down to the smallest detail. Its striking appearance, technical highlights, and customization make the “TITAN” a remarkable custom bike that goes far beyond a standard production machine.
